The Smiths added to Trump rally music (January 23, 2024)

Not sure if this is a joke: tweet says Trump added Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want to his pre-rally music in Laconia, New Hampshire.

Artists have stopped politicians before from using their music for campaigns.

Does anyone know if any other artists have complained about their song being used? And it would be interesting to see in context what the other songs are.

Does Trump even listen to music?

Quite a few complained. It's not easy to stop him - they'd probably have to wound his ego to the point he told his people to strike them off the playlist.

Hmmm, I thought there where artists that were able to pull their songs being used, but maybe that’s just for campaign commercials (?).

Edit: ….

Bruce Springsteen opposed Trump using his song "Born in the U.S.A." at Trump's political rallies in 2016.[7]Rather than take legal action, he openly announced his support for Trump's opponent, Hillary Clinton, and campaigned in support of her. As a result, the song would instead get booed every time Trump would play it at rallies from that point on.‘

‘Both Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones oppose Trump's use of the song "You Can't Always Get What You Want". The band sent him cease and desist letters about its use in 2016, and upon Trump using it again in June 2020, the band teamed up with Broadcast Music, Inc. to threaten legal action if the song is used again.‘

So I guess legal action can be taken.

Western Europe is the last bastion before the US Eastcoast. It's in their own interest too. But he will find ways to make us pay. Fear is a factor. Always.
When George W. Bush was President, Putin invaded Georgia. When Obama was Prez Putin annexed Crimea, with Biden as Potus Putin invaded Ukraine. When Trump was in office Putin invaded nowhere. But yeah.....Trump is the one that lead America into war in Europe.

It depends on the licensing deal the Smiths music has. The Stones had an opt out for political rallies.

So is that Trump basically taking those lyrics and aiming it at desperately wanting another term? “Please please please let me get what I want…”

Very desperate sounding. Odd choice for Trump given his relentless persona.

Sorry, but my first reaction was to laugh with bemusement at the thought this is the most emotionally sweet experience that gathering - mothers, fathers, citizens, human beings, after all - will be treated to during the rallies.

And there's JM taking the unilateral, full-spectrum dominance approach. A grand chap. Sure let him, for a while, after his belated glory. Since somehow JM alone is now The Smiths, for as long as that lasts, Moz is off the hook.

Nutty world though. No hope in either heavy-hitter, only as Juan D says, in third parties. Thankfully, hAmerica is not the world.

Yeah because Donald Trump is acually sitting down picking out the right Smiths song to use :lbf:

Oh Johnny, that whole Trump hater vibe is so old and dull. Does Johnny vote in American elections? Why do people who don't even live in the US have Trump derangement syndrome? When asked, most of these people can't even articulate why they hate the man or what he has done that was worse than what other presidents have done or will do. It's sad, especially now that's been going on for soooooo long. Get over it.

The last president I didn't dislike
dislike was Kennedy and I wasn't even alive then. At least Trump is entertaining. That's the best we can hope for out of today's politicians. Government is slavery, period.

I was at Morrissey's first show after the 2016 election, November 9 if I recall. Grand Sierra casino, Reno. He opened with "Trump-shifters of the World Unite." Said, "We're screwed, we're screwed, we're screwed," many times during the show in his staccato way.

I don't think Moz is MAGA. Right-wing on some topics, not all. There's still room for nuance in our minds, if not the media.

Lefty progressives have convinced themselves that Trump is the 'New Hitler'. They can't see beyond their myopic view to realize that Trump like Slo Jo is just another WEF puppet. Nothing terrible is going to happen under another Trump term, it will be as uneventful as the last. He'll fall into line, as he did with the vax, and the status quo will remain. Meanwhile, a generation of identity politic obsessives will scream and bawl at the 'threat to democracy' never realizing that the U.S hasn't been a functioning democracy since Eisenhower. So who cares what pop song either candidate plays ...
