i was sure the snippets appeared later and even then weren't they released 2 per week in the build up?

I'm not sure that's true. If you look back at 2004, there were no official snippets until about 6-8 weeks prior to the album release in May. They put up two clips a week prior to the album release, and the CD snippets from The Times didn't come until late March/early April.

There was an early play of Irish Blood on KROQ, and this circulated quickly along with boots of the LA shows, but the studio tracks came relatively late.

I guess the single might start getting airplay from mid February onwards..
