The first Jazz musician on the cover of TIME Magazine was Louis Armstrong.

The second wasn't Duke Ellington.
It wasn't Charlie Parker.
It wasn't Bud Powell.
It wasn't Thelonious Monk.
It wasn't Dizzy Gillespie.
It wasn't Miles Davis.

It wasn't a black musician:

It was Dave Brubeck.

TIME

CHANGED.

When I was in high school there were a lot of old magazines in the library. Before Internet to look up old articles there was a reference called the readers guide to periodical literature so I would put in topics like Bob Dylan or something and read old articles. It was hilarious because they were so backward and I realized from that perspective that the current issues will also seem just as stupidly conservative and closed-minded in the future. It's probably not the worst magazine but it's definitely pushing a clear editorial viewpoint and it's really obsolete now.
