I have a recantation:

During the recent Top 100 thread, I was pretty hard on “Sunny.” I think I gave it a 6 or 7. I thought it was an average tune from Morrissey’s middling period. I did not know about the whole Jake relationship which underpins the whole song. Consequently, when my “shuffle” mode hit upon “Sunny” today, the song hit me in the gut. It is poignant, tragic, and beautiful. So, I recant! I take back my former criticism and fully admit the error of my ways…

Good for you! I think this happens a lot in terms of Morrissey's solo material. It is overlooked at first and then... wham, it hits you. I think this actually explains much of the recent poll results i.e. quite average Smiths songs doing much better than really great solo songs. Perhaps this is because The Smiths, as a young man's band, were more direct and instant, whereas Morrissey solo, as the work of an older artist, is generally more subtle and mature.

I always thought Sunny was about Gary Day leaving.

I can quite imagine Gary's nickname being 'Sunny' Day.
