Yeah a friend of mine has also communicated on MSN with girls he's met via such sites as Plenty Of Fish.

I hear it can take a while to get to a level where you feel you know someone on the internet enough to ask them out. My friend says when girls from such sites request he adds them on MSN, it can often mean they just want idle chit-chat and thus it can actually be a longer / fruitless process than if he's just communicated by PM.
