Best Morrissey lyric on the fragility of life?

Depends what you mean I guess, fragility in terms of the link of life & death, or of being a broken person?

Interesting question, gonna have a quick think, then respond!

"One day goodbye will be farewell" came to mind immediately.

"Give in to lust, give up to lust, oh, heaven knows we'll soon be dust"

"Such a little thing
A fumbling politeness
The difference saved me"

"Give in to lust, give up to lust, oh, heaven knows we'll soon be dust"

This one always confuses me because I keep thinking he is the man I think he is... Then I think he's not the man his fans think he is and I'm different because I'm crazy and then I realize I am a fan as well and then I just give up. I don't want him to lose his faith in womanhood. Bleh. This is one of his headiest songs EVER!

Very under-rated song that one.
I think its a straight forward enough track, Moz needs some viagra ;)

Moz is the man, he is a bit shy etc etc, she's a harlot, she moves on to another man, he loses faith in womanhood......to a great guitar outro :)

'Times tide will smother you'

Or, combined with your own inbuilt empathy/memories....

"Your gran died, and your mother died on Maudlin Steet.....with never time to say, all the special things..."

Particularly crushing :(

crushing indeed..

Fragility of life come to my mind whenever I listen Michael's bones and suffer little children... every human being is fragil (I do know), but there's a special mention to the fragility of the weak ones, the poor, the helpless, and obviously animals (meat is murder)

"Time takes all breath away" from You Were Good in Your Time.

There are indeed moments of poetry on YoR, despite some pegging it as a samey rawk album.

That is such a beautiful line. Time takes all breath away. I immediately loved that song when I heard it and then played it about 50 times in a row until I knew every inhalation of breath caught between vocals.

I know that this song has nothing to do really with the fragility of life (rather the fragility of self), but I am really into I Can Have Both right now. It conjures up all kinds of meanings to me and I really wonder what impetus is responsible for its composition.

Also another song that conjures up fragility is The Boy With The Thorn In His Side when he says,
And when you want to Live
How do you start ?
Where do you go ?
Who do you need to know ?

It really describes so simply that feeling of being alone and fragile for me.
Interesting thread, for sure.

My fav, makes me feel very small...

Cemetry Gates

So we go inside and we gravely read the stones
All those people, all those lives
Where are they now ?
With loves, and hates
And passions just like mine
They were born
And then they lived
And then they died
It seems so unfair
I want to cry

I think the most important part of this song is the following lyric:

Or should I wait and hope
To be dragged inside

Something to conquer...a brighter future on the horizon beyond the lure of a candy shop or whatever he's standing in front of.

My favorite too.

Yes, yes and yes. My thoughts exactly. :)

"Oh time is gonna wipe us out" in I'd Love To.

Though, then he continues:

There, I've said it loud and clear
So that you will hear
There's no one in view
Just you
Just you
And time will never wipe you out

Absolutely incredible song, when Viva Hate first came to my attention, I dismissed all the B sides as unimportant :blushing:.

This song is intense, gets me every time. Reminds me of when I was 13 - 18...The 'Unrequited Years', where at times I couldn't sleep at night, so enamoured was I with certain people, who of course were oblivious to my very existance. Also why Let Me Kiss You touches me so deeply

a truly splendid song. well done for remembering!
if only Boz and Moz would write more songs in this dreamy, melancholic style (You Should Have Been Nice is another example).

I remember this song quite well cause it was on my very first Moz CD and got me instantly.

Thanks all, some good songs and lyrics thrown up. In response to the first reply, I was thinking about the link between life and death rather than being a broken person. Anyway, I've been thinking of my own and came up with 'Tomorrow'...

Tomorrow
will it really come?
and if it does come
will I still be human?

Also regarding how easy it is to become a broken person, 'Used To Be A Sweet Boy'...

Used to be a sweet boy
holding so tightly
to Daddy's hand
but that was all
in some distant land
Blazer and tie
and a big bright healthy smile
used to make all
of our trials worthwhile
Used to be a sweet boy
and I'm not to blame
but something went wrong
something went wrong
and I know
I'm not to blame
something went wrong
I can't be to blame

Truly haunting.
