yes..being in a rush, we forgot to bring water, but my friend and I earned some by standing in front of people for shade. at noon we gulped some free water the Staff-Pros were giving out and rushed to the main-stage, only to find out that Morrissey wasn't playing until 6:45pm. anyways, a band called Perfect Circle came out and reminded me somewhat of REM (the singer atleast), they played an improvised version of Love Song by the Cure. Then Bis played for an hour, with little response; Medeski, etc, weren't worth the scorching sun in my eyes. then Perry Farrel played an incohesive hour-set repeating something like "to believe" ?? he was too loud, and my ears plugged up. as soon as he left i began chanting "Morrissey" and "Oye Esteban". DJ Liquid Todd played his sickly beats for an excruciating 30-40 minutes, i think he threw in some Morrissey chants, did anybody else hear that? i was about six feet from the barrier, about fifteen feet from the stage altogether.
then the Operation drum solo began, lights flashing everywhere, Moz rushed out to the front of the stage with his hands extended to the audience, smiling he grabbed the mike and said "where is morrissey" and the band began playing "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side". Did anybody realize how good he looked? his hair was perfect, his torso was lean, his face was so beautiful as he sang; i remember he was radiating so much warmth. Someone threw a teddy bear to Moz, which he caught and promptly returned to the audience.
as soon as that song ended, "The Boy Racer" began and I found i was singing to every song (along with everybody else); it was getting very difficult to breathe and stay standing on my own two feet (not on those of others). Moz took a banana out of his pocket and waved it in front of his crotch while he was singing "he thinks hes got the whole world in his hands, stood at the urinal". remember me anyone? i was the tall brunette guy with the Shoplifters shirt.. I had seen the Tempe setlist beforehand on this site, so i knew which song was next; i cried out "Billy Budd!" at the top of my lungs, and i swear Morrissey looked in my direction and smiled, before starting that song. The crowd began to slow down by "Reader Meet Author" but went wild for "Is it really so strange?", which I think Boz and Alain pulled off really well. Meanwhile, as i was later to find out, my friend, who i'd been separated from in the ruckus, had been taken to the first-aid tent unconscious.
"Hairdresser on Fire" was next, which Alain orchestrated on his guitar very nicely, I loved it when Moz said "when he said I'm gonna screw you", and he blushed when he sang "too busy to kiss me"
..After that, Morrissey walked over to Alain and whispered something in his ear. Here began "November Spawned A Monster" and I was overwhelmed..one of my favorite songs of all time..they played it so beautifully, and Moz sang with such love and passion: "Twisted child, YOU'RE so ugly, so ugly"
I continued crying through "Meat Is Murder" which was sung to in chorus at "kitchen aromas are not very HOMELY!!" very powerful indeed...
The band started playing the intro to "Tomorrow" and we all went insane again. At this point, my good friend and travel companion was back and crowd-surfing somewhere.
At one point, Morrissey asked: "are you enjoying yourselves tonight? Too bad."
later: "I hope you're not in a rush to go home, because we're not."
then he stated: "I can smell your sweat!"
Next was "Break Up The Family", which was sung with such emotion, i found the current live version superior to that on the album. Sustained by "I'm in love for the Last time" and waving repeatedly to the audience when he declared "i want to be with my friends tonight..let me put my arms around them...because i really do love them, now does that sound mad?"
The sample from "Teachers are Afraid of the Pupils" literally came out of nowhere (as if a certain hunchback was turning a crank-operated giant music-box back stage) and the Mozzer whipped the mike cord ferociously singing "Mexico would be a relief." during a pause in the song, Gary Day threw the now-extinct teddy bear's head back into the crowd, did anybody else see this?
They went straight into "last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me" and we all sang along in unison..the falsetto was perfect at the end.."it goes on" Morrissey's shirt was off, and he was rubbing his heart as he sang those final words...
"I love you...very much...goodbye." The band continued playing as he slowly walked off the stage. Alain seemed to be enjoying himself as he finished the song off (I waved to him during "Tomorrow" and he looked away quickly, shaking his head).
I knew it was over when "My Way" by Frank Sinatra came on.
My first Morrissey-live experience.
