Morrissey gets mentioned at least a couple times a month at Dennis Cooper's blog. who else is a fan of this American writer? i don't read much literature, especially not current American lit. but Dennis Cooper, i have bothered to read his books, so Points For Him in the most fundamental sense. i don't think his books are fantastic and he didn't even get particularly good until Guide [1997], but his language has always been very familiar to me. i especially like some pieces he wrote for Artforum, SPIN, and LA Weekly that are anthologized in All Ears by Soft Skull press. there's this thing he did called The Sluts that i think is tremendously cool, but it shouldn't have been a print book; it should have just been online. at any rate: i'm a Dennis Cooper fan.

anyway, Cooper's a pretty big Morrissey fan; he owns all The Smiths' 45s and 12"s on vinyl. he recently did a playful list of his '30 favorite gay songs' of all time ['gay' interpreted in a fashion he called 'obviously idiosyncratic']; Handsome Devil was on the list.

and in fact so was... the Ringleader tour's 'band entrance' song, What a Pretty by Jobriath. i didn't notice until recently the vast makeover that jobriath.org got sometime between the release of the Lonely Planet Boy comp and now. Cooper has an extremely nice piece over there.

Ok, so I'll take that as a big 'no' on the whole 'any Dennis Cooper fans?' deal.

If anybody's interested, I wrote a semi-lengthy piece that was posted on Dennis Cooper's blog. Right now it's still the top entry, but that will change soon. If you wanna read the article, scroll down to 'Math Tinder presents f***ing Poets: A Day for Research Chemicals'.

The subject of the article is a set of obscure 'designer drugs' that enjoyed faddish internet popularity from about 1999-2004. You can also read the article archived at my site, where it may be a little easier to read... not sure. Depends on your font/layout preferences and stuff.

And about Dennis Cooper's work: heavily gay; often basically pornographic; insanely dark. Picture a bunch of beautiful gay teenagers getting murdered by creepy old men. That general sort of thing. His prose is excellent; many ageless phrases. Formally, his works are quite experimental... non-linear, multiple-POV, that type of stuff. If this sounds like something you would like, check it out.
