Cool tale. When did it happen? I wasn't familiar with Mikel so looked him up and found this:

"Mikel Erentxun (born 23 February 1965) is a Venezuelan-born Spanish rock musician of Basque heritage. Formerly with the group Duncan Dhu, he started his solo career in 1992.[1][2] He has released 16 albums as a solo artist and has covered The Smiths' song, "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out", as "Esta luz nunca se apagará", as well as Morrissey's "Everyday Is Like Sunday" as "Todo es Igual Siempre". He has collaborated with Mark Gardener, Robert Quine, drummer Pete Thomas, Lloyd Cole, Matthew Sweet and Fred Maher. "Morrissey, the English born singer who now lives in Los Angeles arrived just before Mikel was scheduled to go on stage at a club in Los Angeles on May 5th. Minutes before the show began Morrissey was introduced to Mikel Erentxun. Morrissey told Mikel he really liked the Spanish version of "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" and thanked Mikel for doing the cover. Mikel responded by thanking Morrissey for writing such great songs."

That's so lovely. Erentxun's version of There's a Light is indeed so so beautiful... I was probably familiar with it before I knew The Smiths song!



The lyrics are actually quite different, which works fine. Can't really literally translate English into Spanish in a song.
