From Baskin89, North of England:

...the film of the excellent novel Hi-Fidelity by Nick Hornby is currently in pre-production. The London based novel set in a record store, strewn with one or two Smiths songs and Mozzer references, has been transplanted to America with John Cusack in the lead role of Rob. Expect a Moz-featured soundtrack. But moreover, if you haven't read it do so soon. It is a must for anyone who is in love with music and love, in that order.

That's complete crap! Why must they Americanize things like this? That story just wont make sense in America! American people don't think like that! It MUST be English to make sense! Rob should be played by a half chubby bumbling 35 year old Englishman...he just wouldn't make sense as an American, and John Cusak? That's utter nonsense. I'm upset about this.

Why should we expect a Moz filled soundtrack??? I'll expect the usual from Hollywood..."How Soon Is Now?" at the most. The rest will be new wannabe "alternative" bands.

I disagree. Although there really is no reason to Americanize it, I don't think it *has* to be in England to work. I'm American, and I read the book, and I've never been able to relate to a book more than that one.

Calm down, Ursula.
As for the Moz filled soundtrack, I'll believe when I see it. Hollywood will probably have a soundtrack full of bands like Harvey Danger covering songs like I Know It's Over. That would be a nightmare. Speaking of nightmares, my sweetheart had one the other night that Unloveable suddenly became a huge hit in America, and hordes of Sugar Ray/Korn fans suddenly became big Moz fans. Scary.

Dear All,

In my initial posting I said Moz-featured not Moz-filled. As Mozzer fans I presumed you would read not misread it.

"Written words on paper . . . etc "

I am a tetchy old fool I know, but so it goes.

Oh and I wholly agree with the idea that the novel, like the Mozzer, has universal appeal. It doesn't have to be filmed in England and anyway John Cusack is a great actor.

I'm Mancunian born and raised and I love loads of American stuff (O'Rourke, Smog, REM, Beach & Beastie Boys et al) . Long live the universal over the parochial.

But thank God I'm English !!!!
Bye .

Excellent book--if I had to pick a book that best represented me, High Fidelity would probably towards the top of my list. I agree that it would probably be better if the story were set in England (I'm an American myself), but as it is going to be set in Chicago (I think), John Cusack is probably one of the best American actors to pull off the part. Just seems like the logical person. The soundtrack--who knows? As to the Harvey Danger comment earlier, I agree that most bands that cover Smiths/Moz songs usually do a poor job of it (anyone remember Love Spit Love doing How Soon Is Now? for The Craft Soundtrack?). As to Harvey Danger, I have seen their live show and met the singer, Sean Nelson, and when I asked who his infuluences were, one of the first bands he mentioned were The Smiths, so perhaps they'll do a decent cover. Just PLEASE, for the love of God, someone play something other than How Soon Is Now?!

A few weeks back I had the very good fortune of meeting Nick Hornby. He mentioned that "High Fidelity" was currently in production and that the film would be taking place in America. More importantly, he stated that though he did not personally write the screenplay, he was very pleased with it, and felt the film would be a fine treatment of his novel. So stop being so worrisome everyone..the insight and cleverness of the story translates to either side of the pond. By the way, for those of you who are interested, Mr. Hornby also mentioned that his third novel,"About A Boy" is also being made into a film..and will be set in England.

They were originally going to film the interior scenes of the record store at the place I go to get my hair cut (Big Hair, which would've been quite remodelled), but Roscoe Village business owners feared it would negatively impact their sales because the street would be more or less shut down for at least a month. So now it looks like it's going to be filmed in Wicker Park, *yawn*.

Also, any Chicagoans looking for a party on Moz's 40th itself, email me. My soiree is not going to be strictly a celebration of him, but there'll be plenty of his music, at least until the birthday ends at midnight....
