From Tony S.:

I don't know if you have the info on this yet but Marr himself sang "Meat is Murder". He ended the song with a superb guitar solo and the whole volume seemed ten times louder than any of the other artists. Great to see him playing some Smiths stuff again, not sure about his singing though, I think that should have been left to Morrissey.

Johnny also played guitar for George Michael and Marianne Faithfull.

And from vu, a transcription of the Uncut Magazine (April 1999) interview with Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner. It's available on his site, Recycled Papers.

Wish I could have heard it though. I didnīt know he could sing. Must have sounded quite interesting.

Johnny also introduced the song in a slightly Moz-esque fashion by saying "if you want to sing along to this one... it's called Meat Is Murder." They also put the lyrics up on the big huge screen behind the stage. He changed "who hears when animals cry?" to "do you care how animals die?" The guitar solo was wonderful as well. His singing voice obviously wasn't as naturally wonderful as Morrissey's, but there was a certain amount of strength in it that I didn't expect.

Can anyone on the list get a copy of this show? Video would be preferred, but I'd be happy with audio. I'm really only interested in the parts that Johnny participated in.
thanks,
rich

Hey, there was nothing wrong with Marrīs singing voice and there was nothing to criticize at all! But that was to expect! If Moz was 70 per cent of The Smiths, Johnny was at leat 29.9!

Did anyone see Johnny when he was on tour with
The The? He did quite a number of back up singing for Matt Johnson...he sounded pretty good to me. I think Johnny doesn't get the credit he deserves. If
it wasn't for Johnny, there would never have been any Smiths!! Don't forget that!!
