The Belgian magazine Humo this week features a 3pg interview with The Man Himself, by Serge Simonart.

Moz is quite straightforward on the issue of Mike Joyce. He literally states that he himself made the best part of The Smiths. He wrote the lyrics, parts of the music, did the sleeve design, etc. In general, he claims he was more involved than Johnny Marr. He also states he and Johnny whispered the drumlines into Joyces ear, who he never calls by name, but keeps referring to as 'that drummer'.

Apparently Mozzer also has a loverboy, called Jed. During the interview, the woman from the Gucci-shop called, to ask if they could deliver Jed's new outfits. Moz fled to the adjacent room for a while, looking rather embarrassed.

Was in the audience for the recording of BBC Television's 'Later with Jools' last night. Morrissey the headline attraction - he and the band performed 4 songs - IBEH, First of the Gang to Die, Kiss Me (sic - off the new album) and There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. Quick chat with Morrissey at the piano - usual topics with Morrissey appearing shy and awkward initially before rising to the 'challenge'. Meltdown guests the Ordinary Boys were on the show too and got a Mozzer namecheck.

The new issue of City Life, out on Wednesday, features an article on Morrissey as well as a small piece on the photographer Stephen Wright, of Salford Lads Club fame..

Here are a couple of quotes from the article:

“I often wonder what people expect of me, but I don’t make any attempt to provide it.”

“I went through great gulps of doubt wondering whether there was actually any point to it,” says Morrissey of the gap between the critically panned 1997 album Maladjusted and You Are the Quarry. “But I was always overcome by the basic rush for the passion of pop music which, despite what we see, I still feel. I can’t give up hope.”

“I’ve made an album which I really love and it changes my life and pushes me forward.”

City Life Issue 536 on sale from 19 to 26 May.

The Heroes Issue: Franz Ferdinand meet Morrissey!

On a rainy Sunday morning in west London a couple of months ago, a summit took place between pop heroes as sharp of mind as they are of trouser. Morrissey and Franz Ferdinand met for the first time in a hotel room near Paddington Station. The Mozfather was meeting his heirs.

Due to air on Radio 1 shortly so we'll find out. Followup to the story from yesterday - comment was posted by PeanutUK, who submitted the original story (Morrissey NOT to appear on John Peel show; session to be aired on Zane Lowe (May 19)):

It seems the event has been patched up a little since my post. Morrissey has now agreed to do a session "behind closed doors" and without any audience. Peel last night announced that he would now have two exclusive pre-recorded tracks to air from that session in his Wednesday night show but he will not be interviewing him as orignally planed.

It seems that despite the misunderstanding Morrissey will at least be performing one way or another. In the Peel chat room last night producer Louise did state that it is Morrissey's managment who "aren't popular" with the Peel staff at present.

It seems that the whole mix-up is being quitely forgotten about, although we shall see what happens tonight; will he take offense at the colour of the studio door and refuse to walk through it?

MSNBC.com has an 'IT' List that people can independently judge and 'rank' celebrities from 1-5. Currently the list has Johnny Depp, Charlize Theron, Hugh Jackmon, Brad Pitt, and Danzel Washington. Each week a new celebrity is voted to be added to the list and currently Morrissy is within the running. Although, he is lagging in votes. At present time MOZ has only 9% while Gweneth Paltrow has 28%, Kristen Dunst has 36%, Avril Lavigne has 16% (she probably can't even pronounce his name correctly!), and Jamie Foxx has 11% out of 7,700 votes. I'm looking to have him 'WIN' and be added to the list, just concerned that someone link Avril Lavigne could beat him out...what a shame.

A rather uninteresting article published in Tuesdays Daily Star ‘Hot’ section titled Britney’s the Devil came to my attention. An early 90’s picture of the Moz brandished besides a rather dismal picture of Mrs Spears. The editor taps immediately into Morrissey’s slamming of Britney with keen interest and his felling of the pop idols. Just as I began to sense positive progress it reverts to the Bowie comments and describes an ageing 80’s hero even slamming an idol who continually reinvents himself. (Seriously the article had no real objective) Worse yet, the editor questions whether Mozza has got it wrong and describes Britney as a bona fide pop phenomenon. It portrays YATQ as another in a long line of Maudlin Twaddle “he’s” been peddling for 20 years. To be honest I don’t know where im going with this but what twats at the Daily Star. It’s a good thing the paper is filled with enough Tits to keeps 99% of the readers from being subjected to the Bull inside. What will they make of YATQ at No1 I wonder?

In the June 2004 issue of Interview magazine.

MORRISSEY
You Are The Quarry (Attack/Sanctuary)
After a sever-year hiatus, Morrissey remains unchallenged as the iconic troubadour of jangly angst. The former Smiths front man's distinctively conversational moan remains intact, surrounded by the expected chiming guitar rock. But while he displays a laudable social conscience on songs like "America Is Not The World" and "Irish Blood, English Heart", he does so at times with the prosaic poesy of an indignant junior-high book report. Nevertheless, his knack for turning the unlikeliest of hooks into infectiously insouciant anti-anthems still makes this a misfit must-have. - Matt Diehl

There is also a full page ad for the new album in the magazine.

Toronto leading alternative paper "Eye Weekly" has given "You Are the Quarry" a very positive review in their latest publication.

"It'd be churlish to greet this unforeseen comeback with a backhanded compliment, but what the hell, we're slags: Morrissey's first album in seven years wouldn't feel as triumphant had he not veered off the rails with 1997's regrettable Maladjusted, then slid to a halt on the precarious edge of retro/novelty status. Faint praise aside, it's no overstatement to add that You Are the Quarry is as vital a Moz moment as any since he went solo..."
