Today's NME contains a very favourable, and very fair, review of 'You Are The Quarry'. Detailed, knowledgable and considered, it is far superior to the trashy John Harris review in Q. Hell, they even mention 'Trouble Loves Me'!

Anyway, here's the transcript, along with a transcript of their brief trawl through Moz's back catalogue and of their review of IBEH, which has been made 'Single of the Week'.

MORRISSEY RETURNS WITH HIS FINEST ALBUM FOR A DECADE AND A WHOLE HIVE FULL OF BEES IN HIS BONNET.

John, England writes:

Quarry gets a 3/5 (not 2/5 as someone round here had been 'tipped off' by a journalist friend!).
It's an odd review by David Peschek (not sure I've spelt that right!) as it's reviewed together with Prince's new album.
The main criticism is the number of songs which refer to court-cases, taxmen, etc. Highlights singled out are Camden and 'I have forgiven Jesus'. The Prince album also gets 3/5.

Elsewhere in the mag Simon Goddard describes Quarry as 'scrumptious'!

And there's a better than average questionnaire interview with Moz where he expresses genuine remorse at slagging off Elton John and hopes (to God!) that EJ will play Meltdown! Moz says that after his EJ comments, Elton responded by saying nice things about Morrissey which made him feel especially bad. Moz admits that it's a case of Bigmouth Struck Again!

There's also a full page ad for Moz's EMI back catalogue with a caption which says something like 'some singers are bigger than others'!

Men's magazine FHM (no I didn't buy it!) also gives Quarry 3/5 saying that it's better than Southpaw but not as good as Vauxhall.

Found this while surfing the web. Another one of those great Jools Holland compilations DVD with performances from some great bands from the past 10 years. This one titled "Later With Jools Holland - Cool Britannia" and is to include Moz's performance of "The Boy Racer" from 95. Looks to be UK only. the first Jools comp DVD (which included "Suedehead" from 92) was released in the US so maybe we'll get it here as well.

Not a major news story I know, but a bit of good news after the Q review - as promised by Michael Deacon, Zoo has reviewed IBEH in the current issue and given it 5 of 5 stars.

It's not a long review - about as long as the Daily Star one in fact, but great to see Moz polarising opinion!

MORRISSEY
IRISH BLOOD, ENGLISH HEART

Moz tears off his big girl's blouse, flings his flowers into the bin and returns with a patriotic anthem so rock hard you could cut diamonds with it. * * * * *

The review is written by Michael Deacon - cheers Michael!

Quoted from anonova.com

"A song which describes a werewolf looking for beef chow mein in Soho contains rock music's greatest opening line, according to a poll.

Werewolves Of London was a minor hit in 1978 for American singer-songwriter Warren Zevon. The song beat famous tracks by Pink Floyd, Morrissey and the Rolling Stones to the title of Greatest Opening Song Line."

List of all top 16 songs here.

As an aside, I thought the opening line was "trudging slowly OVER wet sand..."

The renewed interest in Moz seems to have persuaded Top of the Pops to dig out an old perforance they rarely show; rather than the more usual Smiths performances that feature on The Complete Picture.

This Friday's (7th May) show, which can be seen on BBC 2 at 7pm, includes the 1992 performance of We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful'.
