Morrissey Moments
SFR's Jonanna Widner talks with the King of Sorrow.
BY JONANNA WIDNER
I caught up with Morrissey a few hours before one of his two shows in Salt Lake City. Actually, I wouldn't call it "catching up" with him: You don't really "catch up" with Morrissey, so much as he sort of glides into your life over the telephone and spend a few surprisingly comfortable moments there. On paper, his wit, charm and, well, sweetness can fall flat, but even during our brief, static-y long-distance call he seemed engaged and genuine; if he was faking, he was very convincing. We spoke for about 15 minutes, and as the phone hung up, he sort of glided back out of the room, like a specter. A specter that happened to influence, in some way, almost every band that you listen to.

JW: Hello.

M: Hullo.

How are you doing?

M: I'm scraping through.

Is the Morman reception a little different than most places?

M: It's open-armed, actually.

Really?

M: Yes, so I'm thinking of joining.

Just listening to BBC Radio 2 here in the UK and I have just heard that The Mozzer is going to be on the Janice Long show on OCTOBER THE THIRD. The show starts at 12 a.m but I'm not sure what time Morrissey will be on. With the Craig Kilborn show in the US, increasing signs of an imminent release of new material...? Hope so!

I called On Camera Audiences to verify all the information about the Craig Kilborn Taping on Sept. 12 and it looks like they've overbooked the show threefold. I spoke to one of their representatives ho told me that they weren't exactly sure how they ere going to handle this particular situation as of yet, but did tell me that approximately 90% of the people who reserved seats online were going to get an "I'm Sorry" email stating they could not accommodate them. He also added that they were going to meet in 2 weeks to discuss the specifics of the audience dilemma... as the show draws closer.

I just spoke to the guy at CBS and he told me that normally 30-50 people sign up for tickets and on that day 600 people have signed up for tickets! So forget about the tickets you have printed out they're no good. He said that they are going to have to change plans maybe to have it outside or something.

The depressing tag continues, and Morrissey fans are described as social outcasts!!!

Down but not out - Colorado Springs Gazette (Aug. 28, 2002)

Morrissey, that old master of mope, now a beloved cult figure
By Bill Reed The Gazette

Excerpt:

Steven Patrick Morrissey never has done anything halfway. So it is only fitting that his fall from grace has been nothing short of spectacular.

Ten years ago Morrissey sold out the Hollywood Bowl in 22 minutes - eclipsing a mark held by the Beatles. Next week he plays the Colorado Music Hall.
In the United States, Moz has been a more shadowy figure. His gloriously effeminate manner, his avowed celibacy, and an affection for Oscar Wilde made him a darkly charismatic figure for gay teens and other social outcasts - the smart, sensitive types who couldn't head bang to heavy metal or pompom to bubbly pop.

He was speaking directly to them, and they could stay cloistered in their dark bedrooms and know that someone, somewhere understood.

Get ready for Morrissey's back-to-back El Paso, TX shows with a free, 18+, Moz/Smiths bash at E9, behind Club 101 downtown. It'll happen Sunday September 1st from 9pm-2am. Hear plenty of Morrissey/Smiths along with Britpop, classic Motown, rockabilly, reggae and more! Plus, enter silly contests like Moz lookalike/soundalike for prizes - including free concert tickets. If that's not enough to get you there, the band (minus Morrissey, of course) is rumored to be there!
