How do you identify? It was an odd question. One that I hadn't contemplated or been asked before. I said, I identify as a masculine heterosexual male.
Such is the frank and open, deep conversation, that gets you somewhere. As I sit for the morning with a transgender woman and transgender man. I pepper my questions with curiosity and the "can I ask this" coyness. Both were willing to honor with answers of all things LGTBQI.
Gender identity is the topic and standard of definition is apparently changing faster than many can grapple. If my memory serves me correctly, it runs as a spectrum on several points.
Anatomical - male, intersex, female
Gender identity - he, they, she
Gender expression - masculine, androgynous, feminine
Sexual orientation- hetero, bi, asexual, gay
It was a real pleasure to interact with such knowledgable people. Funny, but I didn't mention humasexual as they never brought it up. But along that spectrum I see that people can find themselves anywhere on that sliding scale on each of the above points (as in no one is a straight line).
Gender identity has moved leaps and bounds. It is a human rights issue that is rising. You know that they talk about this stuff at schools now. It is really cool to talk in detail about this with my daughter as well. As my wife and I have discussed many times, the kids can be whoever they want to be.
