"Notice of cancellation of performance at Yokohama Bay Hall

We have received notice today from Morrissey that he has judged there to be difficulties with fully providing the staging that the artist himself would wish for. We had been in negotiation with Morrissey in order that we might somehow fulfil his wishes regarding changes to equipment such as the usage of videos and instrumentation, but due to Morrissey's strong desire that the concert cannot take place if everything is not exactly in place, we have been forced to cancel this show. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to all the fans who were looking forward to the concert. We also apologise that this announcement comes at such late notice.

Google is helpful for finding the website for the venue. There are photos http://bayhall.jp/about/ The capacity is just 380, so it isn't surprising that the gig was "sold out". If it were announced that Morrissey was to do a gig at the Half Moon in Putney (London) I would say that a mistake had been made. It's the same sort of thing.

By comparison the Yokohama Arena has a capacity of 17,000. Perhaps someone got the two venues confused?

The one you read is wrong, the capacity is 1100 for standing.

I was there for the second Tokyo show. By the end of the set, it was clear something was up. The encore was fast, stiff, and he looked fed up. It appeared he left the stage in a huff (from what I could tell).

I think the lack of audience response to the videos and his banter got to him. If the American audiences don't give a shit about the royal family, the Japanese are even more out of the loop. ALL of his comments were weird and awkward. Not used to pin drop silence between songs while he bantered away. Yoko Ono? That's all he could think of? That's borderline offensive. Introducing Boz as from Hamamatsu fell flat. His commentary went on for longer than usual each time, maybe trying to get a response from the audience. Very odd to see a performer clearly not understand the audience he was playing to.

Such a weird concert overall. Businessmen on their own still carrying their briefcases catching the show after work looking bored and clearly there just because the poster said he was a famous UK singer with "charisma". Quiet middle aged housewives with their quiet daughters seated the whole time. LOTS of single attendees looking awkward. And lots of checking of phones and a few pokemon collectors. No sing alongs and only light swaying and head bobbing. For what it's worth, I was halfway back on the ground floor near the sound booth, but didn't see much action except at the stage edge and a few pockets of foreigners on the sides. The audience was OBSERVING his performance, not ENJOYING it in a way that he was used to. All the stories about the dead crowd at the Beatles at Budokan must be true. Surreal.

Odd to see a Morrissey show without the hordes of menacing Mexicans that were always present at the L.A. shows I used to go to. Not an issue, just a funny realization that came to mind as I scanned the crowd.

Still a fun show and it was nice to see a changed up setlist. Shirt toss in the first song was a nice experience. Incredibly pleased that he skipped MIM. Voice was great. He sounds 23 again. New versino of First of the Gang is great, but Hard to Walk Tall sounds terrible and really highlights the banality of some of the lyrics when sung so slow.

The crowd got to him. Drama queen as always, he took his ball and went home. Wonder what will happen with Osaka.

That amazing setlist was wasted on Japanese business men?:ha-no:

Try taking a wider view. At the very least, this is appalling tour management. Why book a venue, crow about it being sold out, then find out they are not able to fulfil the 'artist's' wishes?
ah, the usual :drama: from FunkyForeskin..........

Look, if you want to think you've won a pointless argument on a forum hardly anyone reads - it's yours - take it. You can't tell me what I feel. In fact, didn't someone write a song.....?

Revel in your triumph. You deserve it.

A cancellation happens and the trolls can't wait to come out masturbate furiously over the news. And of course we are trusting the word of a family member of a person with a grudge against Morrissey, as is dictated in the terms and conditions of being a mod for this site that a grudge must be held because of the David T v Morrissey thing.

Whether it happens exactly the way people are interpreting or not - unless you were personally effected by the cancellations, why the f*** would you even care? You just have to look at the absolute glee some people post with when news like this comes out as proof enough that all they're doing is hanging around to troll.

The scrutiny in which every little thing is picked over that he does is borderline creepy and obsessive. Do people really not read this and go "well, that must really suck for the people who were going to that show" then just move on?

As ever, there vultures circle and circle and wait for a lapse to before swooping to unleash an overblown and frantic anti-Morrissey narrative.

This is the first cancellation in nearly 18 months of touring, 83 shows in a row. Absolutely no-one on this site is prepared to acknowledge that show completion has significant improved since the resumption of the WP touring in Autumn 2014, that something...either better scheduling or just good health, has gone right. It just doesn't fit the site narrative.

The cancellation statement says the next show is on, so perhaps you might want to keep the gloating in check, at least for 24 hours.

I'm pretty sure there are no cancellations as his insurance premiums will go through the roof. Therefore the dates have had to be better planned and often lack the urgency and intimacy that some of us remember. Particularly the enormodomes he plays. The man himself said he hates playing arenas but that's what he has done in the UK for the last 18 months. I've been to a couple of shows and I just get the impression Morrissey mostly phones his performance in nowadays unless you are lucky enough to be present at the rare gig which surpasses expectations (Dublin 2014 for me was up there with the best I've seen him but then I made an effort to travel there) and a couple of dates this year have sounded that they were fantastic. But these are few and far between. In my opinion.

No gloating - I just wish he'd knock it on the head as he is shortchanging his audience and, more importantly, himself.

I spoke to some semi important looking person after running there before finding out it was cancelled and he basically said they 'couldnt get the stage right to what was expected' . While I was disappointed I felt sorry for everyone involved, all that effort by everyone just for it to be cancelled. I have a feeling it could have been resolved by one decent translator/communicator

Nice accurate analysis. I was there for the first show and the second show. The first one was more electric and once morrissey appeared everyone rushed the stage so it was more like a 'real concert' and morrissey reacted to that I think and was having fun. Second show they had 10 extra security people blocking the aisles so noone could rush the stage, which led to a more muted performance (and i don't theink morrissey liked that). Also note that they didnt play ganglord or MIM in 2nd show. Im pretty sure thats because of the graphic images in both which was prob also unexpected by bunkamura and maybe they asked for that to stop. Was a mistake to play in bunkamura which is basically a classical concert hall. Nice venue tho

You mean you miss the intimacy of the enormodomes he played during the whole Kill Uncle tour?

Seems perfectly reasonable to me. I cannot imagine any other artist wanting to go ahead if "instrumentation" were to be compromised. The fault lies 100% with whichever booking agent (either in the UK or Japan) didn't properly examine the tech spec of the venue before booking it.

No doubt the usual whiners will continue to whine that this is Morrissey's fault. And yet these are the same people who also whine about his alleged financial greed. But if he truly were as greedy as they'd like to believe, he wouldn't cancel a payday due to compromised "instrumentation", would he? Yet more evidence of the inconsistency of the daft, kneejerk "everything Morrissey does is wrong" mindset of those who dominate this silly website.

And yet, here you are. Why not just ignore this 'silly website'? It seems to make you cross.

How strange that the True to nobody webshite has failed to release a statement on the matter :blushing:.
Could it be there's another cancellation to come ?

This would make an authentic Live Morrissey DVD...very funny description. It's also what happens when he plays before 'real people' around the world at festivals, folk outside his delusional Cult, folk who've kind of heard of him as a bit of a weirdo so go along for a look only to wander off and get a burger when he starts trying to tell them that eating meat is a problem whilst he nibbles on Kerrygold cheese between songs...

Incorrect. If there's a technical breach of contract by the venue/promoter he still pockets the cash. Try again. And fail again.

In the UK he mostly played theatres and small to medium sized venues. There were gigs at Wembley Arena and Dublin Stadium.

The translation is mostly accurate -- good job (and there's certainly no subterfuge). But some of the wording is a little off.

It's not Morrissey who passed final judgement -- it was Creativeman, through discussions, who reached the conclusion that it would be difficult (i.e. impossible) to meet Morrissey's exact wishes regarding the stage setting. Morrissey in turn made it clear that if his precise specifications weren't met, the show wouldn't go ahead.

The usage of videos and instruments themselves wasn't a concession Creativeman made (doesn't really make sense), but were among the equipment changes they offered to make during the ongoing negotiations. In the end it wasn't enough...
