Which country produces the best music?

NEMS RECORD SHOP's post begs the question ... which country puts out the best music pound for pound? I used to think that only the best stuff came out of England. In 2005, however, that is no longer the case. I think Canada produces the best music right now. I mean just look at some of the great bands that have come out of Canada as of late ... Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Death From Above 1979, the Unicorns, the Dears, etc. I also think Scotland is up there with Canada in terms of producing some great bands (i.e., Belle and Sebastian, Camera Obscura, Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand, Orange Juice). England still turns out good bands but most of them seem so contrived and boring. Most American indie bands are boring, with exception of Interpol, Cat Power, Sleater Kinney, and the Decemberists.

Iceland as well ... Bjork, Sigur Ros, Bang Gang, uh...maybe not

The UK has always produced the best music per capita, that is without question.

I do fear your sanity however if you quote Franz Ferdinand, they cant play a guitar between the lot of them.

I'm talking about the history of music, "real music" this nation has produced the most influential bands on this planet.

Dont bother arguing, Canada produced Bad Company and Iceland produced battery free eggs and bjork.

no doubt that the uk produces the most original and intelligent music, also produces alot of rubbish.

as long as arcade fire are totally canadian (I thought they were 1/2 u.s.?) then canada and iceland, for sure. england and the states are getting socked by them, just hear how jealous we are in lloyd coles "music in a foriegn language"... well I'm jealous, at least... I hope we (the u.s.) has another good round of good music, like the velvet underground or the ramones... maybe the u.k. and u.s. should join forces and force belle and sebastian and mark kozelek to make good music again... with the help of jeff magnum!!

you know, there's a helluva lot of great new wavey music still coming out of serbia! and don't forget t.a.t.u....

...or maybe forget t.a.t.u....

Bad Company?

Rogers, Burrell, Ralphs and Kirke are all from England, pal. You can claim Bad Company. Not that we haven't got plenty of really poor krep here in the Great white north to be shameful of.

The reason we're trying so hard is that we really feel sorry about giving the world Bryan Adams and we'd like to make up for it. Its the Canadian way.
