Unsung

" Mavis Nicholson is, or was - or is still the best television interviewer from these isles. She broadcast the most
compelling TV interviews with James Baldwin, Kenneth Williams, Bette Davis, Nina Simone, Germaine Greer,
David Bowie … but somehow had only an afternoon transmission - never evening, unlike most of the traditionally sexist
male interviewers. I was lucky enough to be interviewed by her in, I think 1991, when she came to visit me with a
small crew of technicians. I was so much in awe of Mavis … her humanity, her ease, her intellect … that I typically
completely messed it all up. I didn't think I was ready for such an important interview … I didn't think I was "me" yet,
and I rattled on so much about self-destruction and the inevitability of suicide that I later asked Mavis not to air our
conversation. She agreed not to … probably thinking it to be just too much. I often wonder where those tapes
ended up. On a skip, perhaps. But nonetheless, her very impressive interviews ought to be either re-shown or
made available on DVD because they are absolutely a vital study of how to get the best out of the subject … no
sex jokes, no fake and intrusive audience laughter, no loud or lavish sets … just a very classy connection requiring
nothing but gentle charm and the power of words." Morrissey, December 2020.

Leave it to the fella that posted the info originally - thanks Joe!

But unfortunately the links to the vids in the older message thread posts are not operational. So at one point the past the interview was available.

Anyone feel like conducting some interweb-investigation and discover where a working video may be?

The link in the original post was for the Bowie interview.

“The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return!”
That's my Saturday night film settled, I think.

True, but in all fairness - its Kylie!

And here they are together....on the same page.

This is such an iconic image now... The start of Britpop.... I actually have this issue tucked away somewhere and I never ever remembered Kylie on it....
well spotted Mr Shoes, I don’t mind a bit of Kylie, and her new stuff is pretty good....

I love Moulin Rouge! ❤

í am going to just pretend that í never read this.

"Mo***n R***e" is, on balance, the single worst feature film í have ever had the misfortune to see in a cinema.

It should have been perfect. í went to see it in the now-deceased Zeigfeld Theater in mid-town Manhattan back in summer 2001. A plush picture palace of sumptuous flock velvet gilt-edged gold and maroon finery, it was designed for a film like this. í had loved, and still love, Luhrmann's "William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet". The auditorium was packed with what appeared to be every gay man in New York City, or mid-town at least. This is gonna be grrreat, í think. Wrong.

By the end of the second reel, í was reduced to studying the fixtures & fittings of the interior of the Zeigfeld rather than looking at the screeching car crash on the screen. It was like being trapped in a small elevator with the world's loudest, most annoying fake queen for over 2 hours. Even the gay crowd were rattled. By half-way through there was a slowly growing chorus of 'tsk tsk', blooming quickly in to many a 'Jeeezus...are you kiddin?' By Kylie-time, people were openly clucking their studded tongues. There were more than a few walk outs. í would have done the same, but í had chosen a centre seat and didn't fancy running the grabbers gauntlet in order to escape. Although, if í had, at least í would have got some pleasure from the night..?

í remember wishing í could have put the 'reviews' í overheard in the gents afterward on the posters outside.

í loved the red velvet circular banquette very much though.

But, hey, enjoy your Saturday night! :thumb:

Oh, honey, no. Just no.

Well, nobody is perfect and I'm sorry it was such a horrible experience for you. 😘

Edit: I think I went twice to watch it in the theatre and then again in late summer in an open air showing.

I hate the editing.

But I love Ewan & Nicole.

Do you think í should try again? A lockdown goal, perhaps?

Believe it or not, this Saturday night í am probably going to be working on a spreadsheet...

Wanna swap?

Tempting!

I'd say give it another go. It can't be worse than the first time.

At the time there was nobody on earth who I adored more than Ewan and Nicole. I still have a promotional poster of Nicole sitting on a swing wearing a cute top hat somewhere.

You could always go crazy and have a "Moulin Rouge"-Excel speedball. If you think you can take it...?

.
If it turns out that I can't, it's on your head.
