The Scotsman: A-Z of 2009

M is for Morrissey

Landing mid-February, Years of Refusal is the ninth solo album from the master manipulator, who keeps the fans guessing with his oblique lyrics. Following the sexually liberated lines which caused such a rumpus on Ringleader of the Tormentors, Morrissey returns to more lovelorn and repressed sentiments, with his musings on mortality tinged by the sad knowledge that producer Jerry Finn died weeks after completing work on the album. Musically, there are no great revelations but the sleeve art, featuring a musclebound Moz holding "his" baby, should provide the conspiracy theorists with plenty to chew over. FS

R is for bands reforming

Bands of yore miraculously burying their bitter differences in order to reform years down the line is no new phenomenon but with touring being a genuinely lucrative option for musicians these days, expect a rash of musical resurrections in 2009. There are already some intriguing reunions on the cards – post-punk heroes Magazine play a handful of dates, including Glasgow Academy on 16 February, while Two Tone legends The Specials (minus Jerry Dammers) have already sold out the same venue on 28 and 29 April. Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon have mended their bridges and Blur will now play two dates at Hyde Park in July. Cliff Richard has reunited with the Shadows to tour in September/October and Rod Stewart is set to rejoin his wrecking crew The Faces, with dates to be announced. And rumours of a Morrissey/Marr rapprochement just won't go away … FS
