Tell Me Why I Need A Mac

I'm getting a new laptop. I was going to get a PC, but many of my friends are telling me that I should get a Mac. Which do you prefer and why? Also, have any of you ever switched from a PC to a Mac and regretted it?

I switched from PC to Mac and I'm absolutely glad I did it. I'd never switch back for the world. I just feel that I can get so much more accomplished without some of the problems that PC's present.

Of course, I am aware that some feel the same way about PC's -- that they think Mac's aren't all they're cracked up to be.

Well I'm typing to you on a Mac now, and my fancy is with it over PC's.

+1...I made the switch and am very happy..the only downside is I'm going to school and some of the software doesn't work with mac's...Which is an easy fix, as the new Mac's can also run windows...I just can't bring myself to put windows on a perfectly operating mac.

Oh hey, it does!

Mac's run seemlessly, go to sleep and wake up fast, have a beautiful screen that photos looks so much better on, an excellent iSight camera, generally are faster and have an amazing customer service team to back you up. By far a mac is an incredible technology investment, and syncing your iPod and whatnot is so much easier. Definitely get one. I switched in college when mac was the design platform of choice and was amazed back then at just how user friendly it was.

It partly depends on what you expect to use your computer for. If you're going to do more media-related things (especially things concerning video and video editing), I would recommend that you get the Mac. I majored in Film and Photography Studies in college, and all of my video and multimedia classes made use of Macs. When I edited video in college, I used FinalCut Pro on a Mac.

On the other hand, if you're going to use your computer primarily for word processing, document creation, surfing the Internet, etc., I would buy a PC. I would recommend a Dell. I actually have 2 Dell laptops (I got a new one for Christmas last year, in fact), and the older one, which I've had for about 6 years now, and use pretty much every day, still runs perfectly! I've had no problems with it whatsoever in all that time.

We all know that the main purpose of the whole internets is porn. And we know that porn sites easily infect your computer with PTDs, pornography transmitted diseases. Macs come with some sort of vaccine so you can watch porn all you want! yay!

I vote PC. I've never had a Mac...but I've used them in the computer lab at school.

Well, I'm technologically inept...so that posed various problems for me. It was doing this deal where it was getting all freezy and sticking kind of. Like, It kept making me drag around this icon thing. It was weird. I shut it down and ran it as windows. Some of the problems went away...but alas, it was mainly the unit itself.

This topic rarely ends well because I'm yet to see another product which attracts such steadfast and often irrational brand loyalty as those who argue between Mac/Windows/Linux, but here goes.

At this point in their development (Snow Leopard vs. 7) there is pretty much no discernible difference in the things you can use the machine for. Both choices have pros and cons but in reality you are unlikely to have any major problems with either.

Mac has a number of pros that are exclusive to it. First, the major one is its integrated nature. Apple have spent a lot of time tailoring each piece within the system so it causes as few conflicts with the underlying hardware as possible. It also comes with a better basic software suite (iLife) as opposed to windows which has now been stripped of most of its proprietry software. And obviously there is the design, which many people consider a plus.

Now on the downside you will be paying a premium of around 1/3 for this integrated system compared to an out of the box Dell or HP. If you want to play high-end video games also...give the Mac a miss. There is also less freedom to mess around with the machine in a mac.

So basically it comes down to personal preference. The things most people take for granted (www, Word processing, photos, music etc) are handled quite easily by both. It's just a question of whether you want to pay the financial premium in order to have the all-in-one integrated package you get from Apple or if you are one of those people like me, who are always upgrading and messing about inside the thing.

Advantages of Macs are they look nice, Apple "borrowed" lots of technology from free open source software. Advantages of PCs cheaper and easier to upgrade with more variety of hardware and software.

Have you had one of those video tours on apple's site? Lots of nice visuals that showcase how user-friendly macs are and might help with your decision.

Can't beat the handy click and drag feature (as opposed to cut and paste).
I've also found that installing software is easier on a mac. And the security features on a mac cannot be overlooked.

But hey, you're getting a new computer, can't go wrong either way!
