Actually I remember the Smiths being interviewed on Piccadilly Radio around the time of Hand in Glove on the Mike Sweeney show.

THAT'S the point. Only Piccadilly Radio played The Smiths. Not a single record store had a poster of The Smiths nor a record to begin with for some time. Even the other indie labels with Backs/ Cartel backing only had a handful of records (12" usually and some 7") in the shops. London was Rough Trade's homeland but did they do anything? It was word of mouth and amazing concerts - and maybe those yellow flowers - that made The Smiths the biggest (northern) band in the UK.
Meanwhile the radio was full of Wham, Howard Jones, Heaven 17, Eurythmics, Stock, Airlines and Waterman and - believe it or not - Jimmy Saville and Kid Creole and the coconuts and nah nah bananarama. And ZTT. - urghhhhhhhh.

Heaven knows I'm Miserable now.
NME special - what she said - and Raymonde were a relief better than Alka Seltzer and 4ad.

Strawberry x
