Best debut album

Can't Buy a Thrill, the debut album by Steely Dan (1972). Christ it's 48 years old!! o_O Brilliant.

Welcome to the Pleasuredome - debut album by FGTH - (1984) excellently outrageous back in the day & at times difficult to get hold of.

The Smiths, obviously.
Rattlesnakes by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions was a great debut also. What a great year 1984 was!

Going by the criteria of great debut albums and not necessarily a band best album, I would add:

Tears for Fears - The Hurting
Dexy's Midnight runners - Searching for the Young Soul Rebels
Deacon blue - Rain Town
Dio - Holy Diver
James Blunt - Back to Bedlam
The Courteeners - At Jude
Soft Cell -Non Stop Erotic Cabernet

Non Stop Erotic Cabaret, what a brilliant album - I still get goose pimples when I hear Marc Almond sing.

Couple of personal favourites, in no particular order, some of which have already been named by others.

I'm really into debut albums for some reason. They have something special about them and I often like them better than the most popular albums...

Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
U2 - Boy
Jeff Buckley - Grace
The Cure - Three Imaginary Boys
Echobelly - Everyone's Got One
The Long Blondes - Someone To Drive You Home
The The - Soul Mining (or Burning Blue Soul, depending on your preferred definition)
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Patti Smith - Horses
Roxy Music - Roxy Music
Nirvana - Bleach
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine

Plus some metal stuff, which I also listen to a lot, but suppose not many on here do (although I was pleased to see Holy Diver mentioned before).

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Mercyful Fate - Melissa
Danzig - Danzig
Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times
Dio - Holy Dover
Metallica - Kill'em All

...and both Morrissey and The Smiths.

Echobelly's a great shout, also just remembered The Cranberries - Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?,

True! They weren't on my radar.

Can't believe I forgot to mention Elastica. doh:

Being a 55 year old mod the debut albums by The Who My Generation and The Kinks really impacted on me to a extent that I still play them today.

Non Stop Erotic Cabaret, what a brilliant album - I still get goose pimples when I hear Marc Almond sing.

“Standing in the door of the Pink Flamingo, Crying in the rain”

great tune, and as with you, it brings goose bumps

This is my favourite Soft Cell lyrics:

"As for me, well I'll find someone who's not goin' cheap in the sales
A nice little housewife
Who'll give me a steady life and not keep going off the rails"

Pure brilliance , I do think Soft Cell are very under rated

Generation Terrorists could have been on there too, but in my opinion it needed a few less songs. Still a great album though. Most bands never record something as great as Motorcycle Emptiness, let alone on their debut.

Saw them live when that came out.....remember they promised to break up afterwards. Good job they didn't.

I saw Deacon Blue on their first tour at a Uni gig and there couldn't have been more than 30 people at the gig.
