This article is in today's Boston Globe - Singer gets Wilde news:

BIGMOUTH STRIKES AGAIN
He's been a fan of Oscar Wilde's forever, so sad-sack singer Morrissey was understandably delighted this week to learn that he and his literary hero have something in common: They've both been on the Orpheum stage. "Is that true?" the former Smiths frontman asked an audience member at Monday's show. Yes, it is. According to Richard Ellman's definitive bio, Wilde spoke at the Orpheum, which was then called The Music Hall, on a snowy January night in 1883, and the place was packed with Harvard students. "Wilde was in his late 20s then and very flamboyant," said John Paul Riquelme, a BU professor who's writing a book called "Oscar Wilde's Aesthetic Politics." "He was sort of a Tiny Tim character and a genius in his dialogue." Yes, but could he sing?

  • I didn't read the whole thing. I thought I remembered reading about where Wilde lectured in the Ellman bio, I thought Morrissey would have read that.

Is there really a valid comparison to be made between Oscar Wilde and Tiny Tim? If people are going to be introduced to Morrissey or Oscar Wilde by way of this article, what a great image--Sad sack singer loves dead flamboyant Tiny Tim. Ugh.

I was able to speak with Tiny Tim just a few short years before he passed on. I met him in Massachuesetts in...hmmm....must have been '97 or '98. I think he was a very fascinating person who certainly beat the odds in the music world (as Morrissey has). When Tiny hit the charts it was almost unconcievable that someone so flamboyant could be successful in the US in those days. I think the comparison was based mainly on his flamboyancy. He was a very friendly man. RIP Tiny Tim.

  • that was no ordinary "audience member" that informed Morrissey of this fact. It was everyone's favorite "ultrafan" Julia
