Amongst the 'outrage' at Morrissey's 'controversial' comments towards his former head teacher, the following appeared on the Diary Page of today's Manchester Evening News (12th July - the Diary Page is the showbiz gossip page). Link to article online.

Former Smiths guitarist, Andy Rourke, was amongst the crowd braving the summer cold to watch Morrissey headlining the Move Festival last night.

But it wasn't just nostalgia that brought Andy out to support his old band mate. Complete with camera crew, he was busy recording footage for a new DVD on life after The Smiths.

The documentary, which should be out to buy in February, follows Andy and former drummer Mike Joyce, who also still lives in Manchester.

It is being made by Steve Petricco's Fab Cafe Films, an offshoot of his Portland Street bar, where Andy DJ's, and is being edited by Mark Standley, former lead singer of Manchester punk band V2.

  • Can't see this ever seeing the light of day. Who would be interested?

They'll probably sell 10 copies over the internet.

  • Does anybody know if Morrissey knew that Andy was in attendance for that show? If so, I'm curious as what he may have commented on...

  • During my ten hour plus wait at Manchester Piccadilly Station after the MENA gig I chatted to a few disparate fans there. One of them had sat next to Andy Rourke at the concert - and had the legend's signature to prove it. Apparently he was quite easy-going and mentioned, amongst other things, that the whole celibacy thing in the eighties was complete rubbish. Yes, I know, hardly the scoop of the century, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Sadly enough, I felt obliged to shake the guy's hand as he had done the same with Andy Rourke. I like to think I had his DNA on my hands for a few hours... OH GOD...
Neither one particularly appeals to me...
  • when its finished, they should call it "No Life After The Smiths". there may be no one more pathetic in music history than Rourke and Joyce [maybe Tony McCarrol].

  • Actually I think it would be interesting to watch. Unless you are a complete dickhead then you should realize that Rourke and Joyce contributed a lot to the band. Yes Marr wrote the music and MOZ wrote lyrics and sang, but Marr didn't have shit to do with the bass lines to the songs or the drums. I had the oppurtunity to meet both of them on their DJ tour several months ago. They were so down to earth and nice. I had a very nice conversation with both of them. It was a great evening. It is too bad they are rarely talked about in any press. Only negative things like Rourke's drug problem and then the court case show up in articles. But ask yourself if you were in one of the greatest bands of all time and you got screwed out of royalties and money wouldn't you want a fair slice. They were an integral part of The Smiths.
