"I'll see you somewhere, I'll see you sometime, darling..."

Then the harmonica comes in for those precious few seconds... I love that song, so sad though....

And it's gotta be about Johnny Marr hasn't it? Which makes it all the more heartbreaking:(

spleenhead

Yes, I am spleen
I don't listen to Strangeways a lot any more but when I do it takes me about 2 hours because I listen to Paint a Vulgar Picture and I Won't Share You over and over again. They're very different but both truly amazing songs.

I know it's a topic people raise all the time but I haven't had the pleasure or the privilege of posting my 10 favourites on here, so:

Smiths (this is so hard but...)

1. Miserable Lie
2. Reel around the Fountain
3. William
4. Paint a Vulgar Picture
5. I Won't Share you
6. Stretch out and Wait
7. Rusholme Ruffians
8. Bigmouth Strikes Again
9. Still Ill
10. This Night has opened my eyes
11? Well I Wonder

Moz

1. I don't mind if you forget me
2. Jack the Ripper
3. Lucky Lisp
4. Come Back to Camden
5. Such a little thing makes a big difference
6. Trouble loves me
7. Why don't you find out for yourself
8. Alsatian Cousin
9. Late Night, Maudlin Street
10. Interesting Drug

I know this is unrelated, but can anyone tell me anything about "Oh phoney"? WHen was it recorded - and why?!

1989 I believe. And by the way, nice choices. I love Lucky Lisp but I always thought that song was disliked, which would be absolutely criminal if that is true. Interesting Drug is my #11 and Such a Little Thing (along with Lucky Lisp) are probably within my top 20. And I just recently discovered Come Back to Camden. I never noticed it as so great before, then it just struck me out of nowhere. It's so beautiful.

"I'll see you somewhere, I'll see you sometime, darling..."

I Won't Share You usually makes me choke up, songs rarely make me cry, but this song comes close most of the times I hear it. The harmonica is a perfect little touch, and I absolutely love the way he sings "darling". Every guitar note, every bass note, every line sung is perfect. What a way to end The Smiths, even though it wasn't intentional.

I never really saw it as about Johnny Marr. I know that Joyce or Rourke once said that they thought it was about Marr, but I always saw it as a little straightforward. Not at all in a bad way, just it didn't have any secret behind-the-scenes meaning in my view.

According to Paul Morley's article/interview with Moz in this year's Uncut, it was recorded in the winter of 1989 at Hook End Manor, and is a "remnant from his 'lost' second album".

Why? Well, I really don't know why they had to record it, ask Morrissey! :D But at least they didn't release it - fortunately.

The Smiths:
1. I Know It's Over
2. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
3. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
4. Still Ill
5. Well I Wonder
6. Half A Person
7. These Things Take Time
8. Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
9. A Rush and A Push and the Land Is Ours
10. Unhappy Birthday
This Night Has Opened My Eyes, That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore, Nowhere Fast, Hand In Glove, Sheila Take A Bow, Panic were also strong contenders.

Morrissey:
1. Jack The Ripper
2. November Spawned A Monster
3. I'd Love To
4. Maladjusted
5. Alsatian Cousin
6. I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday
7. Life Is A Pigsty
8. Nobody Loves Us
9. You Must Please Remember
10. I Have Forgiven Jesus
You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side should be there, too. This is really hard. :( I'll probably change my mind soon.

This was hard (but a good way of passing the wee small hours!) and probably different to the lists I've posted before and will post again but like I said. Hard. The top 3 on each list are pretty definitive, though. I don't think they'll ever change :)

The Smiths:
1. What She Said
2. How Soon Is Now?
3. Still Ill (Rank version, pls - gets me every time)
4. The Hand That Rocks The Cradle
5. Bigmouth Strikes Again
6. Nowhere Fast
7. You've Got Everything Now
8. I Want The One I Can't Have
9. Paint A Vulgar Picture
10. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

Morrissey:
1. Irish Blood, English Heart
2. Life Is A Pigsty
3. Such A Little Thing Makes Such A Big Difference
4. You're The One For Me, Fatty
5. Nobody Loves Us
6. The National Front Disco
7. Will Never Marry
8. The Last Of The Famous International Playboys
9. Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself?
10. Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice

Honourable mentions also go to I Know It's Over, Meat Is Murder, I Have Forgiven Jesus, Trouble Loves Me, Let Me Kiss You, You Have Killed Me, Well I Wonder and London...

Asleep at the Wheel

This is Me on a Pale Day
Morrissey:
1: The National Front Disco
2: Everyday is Like Sunday
3: Speedway
4: Alsatian Cousin
5: Ammunition
6: Late Night, Maudlin Street
7: Trouble Loves Me
8: You Must Please Remember
9: The Operation
10: On the Streets I Ran
Glad to see someone else who rates Speedway highly. In my book, it's #1. Haunting tune, can't get it out of my head.

Kuiper

Better than Marr
Yeah pretty much everything in the top 10 is equally my favorite in some way, so Speedway is as good as #1 for me (with around 50 other songs by him; I've reached the dillema that is in all seriousness too good, there are too many songs I want to hear him play live, too many that I consider my favorites, too many to put onto a mix tape). I don't know quite how to explain it, but I'll try. There are things that make each one of those and many others my favorite, so I unfairly discriminate amongst the things that I love about it. So I do not necessarily consider those ranked higher to be truly superior somehow, but I have created some sort of illogical preference for certain traits that make a song one of my favorites.

Why the angry smiley?

And I should have included Yes, I Am Blind in my list. Oh well. Maybe we should have done Top Twenty instead?
