I’m deprived of any real sense of community. It’s alienating. Granted, there’s nothing keeping me here. I have my reason for staying.
An interesting aspect of New York is that it is one of the most liberal and anti-racist cities in the world and yet everyone self-segregates based In race. Whites move to Williamsburg to be around other whites, Hispanics move to Jackson Heights to be around other Hispanics, Asians move to Flushing, etc.
And for a city that is extremely anti-racist, race is literally the only thing anyone ever wants to talk about. People talk about the South being very “racist” and I suppose that element is there (not as much as people think though) but it’s still considered impolite to talk about race. But in New York, it’s all race, all the time.
One thing you notice about sci-fi set in the future is that it always presents race as a non-issue. There is a lot of sci-fi that shows class still being a problem in the future (Metropolis, The Time Machine, etc). But race is something that everyone assumes that humanity eventually gets past. How is never explained. It’s just assumed that the problem eventually fixes itself somehow.
But a more likely scenario is that we are looking at a future where EVERYTHING is about race.
