Morrissey Central "OPEN LETTER TO JOHNNY MARR." (January 25, 2022)

This is not a rant or an hysterical bombast. It is a polite and calmly measured request: Would you please stop mentioning my name in your interviews?

Would you please, instead, discuss your own career, your own unstoppable solo achievements and your own music?

If you can, would you please just leave me out of it?

The fact is: you don’t know me. You know nothing of my life, my intentions, my thoughts, my feelings. Yet you talk as if you were my personal psychiatrist with consistent and uninterrupted access to my instincts. We haven’t known each other for 35 years - which is many lifetimes ago. When we met you and I were not successful. We both helped each other become whatever it is we are today. Can you not just leave it at that? Must you persistently, year after year, decade after decade, blame me for everything … from the 2007 Solomon Islands tsunami to the dribble on your grandma’s chin ?

You found me inspirational enough to make music with me for 6 years. If I was, as you claim, such an eyesore monster, where exactly did this leave you? Kidnapped? Mute? Chained? Abducted by cross-eyed extraterrestrials? It was YOU who played guitar on ‘Golden Lights’ - not me.

Yes, we all know that the British press will print anything you say about me as long as it’s cruel and savage. But you’ve done all that. Move on. It’s as if you can’t uncross your own legs without mentioning me. Our period together was many lifetimes ago, and a lot of blood has streamed under the bridge since then. There comes a time when you must take responsibility for your own actions and your own career, with which I wish you good health to enjoy. Just stop using my name as click-bait. I have not ever attacked your solo work or your solo life, and I have openly applauded your genius during the days of ‘Louder than bombs’ and ‘Strangeways, here we come’, yet you have positioned yourself ever-ready as rent-a-quote whenever the press require an ugly slant on something I half-said during the last glacial period as the Colorado River began to carve out the Grand Canyon. Please stop. It is 2022, not 1982.

BTW, did anyone else notice a strange menstrual metaphor in this passage? "It’s as if you can’t uncross your own legs without mentioning me. Our period together was many lifetimes ago, and a lot of blood has streamed under the bridge since then." :ROFLMAO:

i guess i'm just a bit confused about the timeline here: the "red pullover" must refer to marr's (admittedly ghastly) choice of outfit in the "get the message" video, but unless that aired way prior (like six months) to its single release (april 1991) then i can't see how morrissey managed to reference it in "our frank" (recorded in 1990, and even released prior to "message"). the two different versions of "getting away with it", which would fit chronologically, do not line up with the lyric
Theory debunked!

I think it was Mark E. Nevin, who worked on Kill Uncle talked about recording that song. He said that when Morrissey sang that verse about the red pullover he and someone else in the studio started laughing, but still had to keep playing, and it got worse and worse and they couldn't stop and they had tears streaming down their cheeks and when they were done, Morrissey very straight faced just sat there and Mark said you could see he was just enjoying the effect he had just had on them by making them laugh so uncontrollably. It sounded like a lot of fun, but there wasn't any indication it is about Johnny or anyone in particular.

How sad is your life when you "love love love " morrissey being bitchy to the person he made the best music with. Johnny didn't need to be a suck up or wear a dress on stage

I'd rather M work with johnny than that Dumb Mexican. The Mexicans are the worst thing to happen to him.

Surprised you can't see this for what it is.
A desperate attempt to troll Marr ,cause he is now the popular respected one ,with a record deal and people happy to interview him..
Morrissey looks like an old lady these days..he can't get any interest, so he goes to the smiths.
By attacking a smith.

What do you guys think? Did this letter just rile up his base? Did it make him any more popular or gain him sympathy? Will it get him a record deal or will he get dropped by his management? From what I can see on social media - it elevated both their visibility, but as usual I saw Moz-bashing about 90% of the time. All the articles mentioned the UNCUT article on Johnny and that he has an album coming out next month and tours - so he's in the plus column. So I'd say Johnny came out on the plus side, Moz still undetermined.

¡Viva México! You racist twat!

Johnny is probably the last person Moz has to worry about speaking ill of him. Also, saying "you don't know me" to people who obviously is kinda sad.

He's not wrong. Every time Marr does an interview it's about Morrissey and The Smiths whereas no one is beating down Morrissey's door to get his thoughts on Marr.
"instead, discuss your own career, your own unstoppable solo achievements"

Does anyone think this kerfuffle will help Moz get a record deal? He's certainly getting a lot of press!

Oh yeah, definitely. All the record label bigwigs are queuing up at his door with contracts in hand!

It's a response to Marr's interview in Uncut:

Thread 'Express: "The Smiths split ‘bruised me emotionally, it turned to s*** with Morrissey’ – Johnny Marr" via Uncut Magazine (January 13, 2022)' https://www.morrissey-solo.com/threads/express-the-smiths-split-‘bruised-me-emotionally-it-turned-to-s-with-morrissey’-–-johnny-marr-via-uncut-magazine-january-13-2022.149026/

It might be meh to us, but it clearly wounded M.
Funny how he got his knickers in a twist because I don't see anything nasty there. Just an honest take on the situation as it stands, They're not close. It's not like Marr has said M is this that or the other, and there is plenty of ammo out there if he REALLY wanted to take a shot!

It sounds like a build up, maybe seeing the Smiths described as shit made him snap?
