from http://getsome.org/guitar/olga/main/s/smiths/heaven_knows_im_miserable_now.crd

i get that each line is a string and i know those chords stated above but what the hell does each number and dash on the line represent?

soz for being a bit of a dim-wit but ive literally played for an hour so the extent of my knowledge is minimal :)

thanks for your help!

each number represents a fret, so for example
G:-----7----
means play a note on the 7th fret on the G string :)
the dashes don't mean much i don't think
hope this helps
try i won't share you, hand in glove and there is a light..

Code:
     F#maj7 Dmaj7 C#m B
f#----7-------3-----2-----0------------------------------------------
c#----9-------5-----3-----2------------------------------------------
a-----8-------4-----4-----2------------------------------------------
e-----9-------5-----4-----2------------------------------------------
b-------------------------0------------------------------------------
f#-------------------------------------------------------------------

This one here is a bit confusing for a new player because this looks like strange tuning. Really what the person has done is shown the tuning for a capo on the second fret.

Typically tuning is going to be:

Code:
e
B
G
D
A
E

Check out www.guitarnoise.com

They have free lessons and start with very basic stuff.

You should also learn the following chords to begin with:

A,Am,C,D,E,Em,F,G

The F is normally a barre chord which can be hard to learn but here is a variation of it that is easy to play:
