Johnny Marr records score for new Leonardo DiCaprio flick

Johnny Marr records score for new Leonardo DiCaprio flick

from Consequence of Sound by Ray Padgett
Johnny Marr may be the only man who can rival Jack White in musical versatility. He currently plays in The Cribs. A year ago he played in Modest Mouse. Before that he was with some other band. Nowadays he records film soundtracks on the side. Back in December we reported on him scoring the upcoming Antonio Banderas film The Big Bang and now he’s back with the soundtrack to Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest, Inception. Check out the tracklist and trailer below, which features some pretty dramatic music.
Marr plays guitar on a soundtrack written by legendary film composer Hans Zimmer, who you may remember from his work on every movie ever made. “I enjoyed working on Inception and it’s a great soundtrack,” Marr said. “Hans invited me and he’s someone I’ve wanted to work with for a long time. We really got into it, it’s a really good movie.”
“My goal for the score was to create a complete sonic world to immerse the audience—big waves of sound that connect the different layers of dreaming but really focus on a simple emotional thread,” Zimmer said in a recent interview.
If you’ve been to the theaters recently, you’ve probably caught the bizarre trailer (embedded below). DiCaprio’s character creates dreams, puts people in them, and then steals their secrets. Pretty soon the dreams start to fall apart, because this is the only logical conclusion to such a logical premise. This all culminates in dramatically yelling, “The dream’s collapsing!” which, it’s worth noting, sounds like the title of a Smiths song.
Inception hits theaters July 16th. The soundtrack drops on CD and digital three days earlier and on vinyl August 3rd (via AntiMusic).

Watch: Johnny Marr and Hans Zimmer perform Inception score

It turns out Johnny Marr’s involvement in the forthcoming Inception goes beyond collaborating with the equally legendary Hans Zimmer on the film’s score. Last night, the former Smiths and Modest Mouse/current Cribs guitarist teamed up with Zimmer and a 20 piece orchestra for a live performance of the score, reports The Playlist.
The performance took place at El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles shortly after the film received its premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood. And while the event was a private party, us common folk can relive the concert on ustream.tv. The performance begins at the 53:00 mark. There’s also an interview with Marr and Zimmer at the 50:30 mark.
Inception hits theaters July 16th. The soundtrack drops on CD and digital three days earlier and on vinyl August 3rd.

Re: Watch: Johnny Marr and Hans Zimmer perform Inception score

I couldn't do anything else while watching that: it used up all my bandwidth. Guess that's the way of the future!

It's not trademark Johnny, is it, except maybe for the 2nd half of the music piece. Even then his part is still repetitive: he's not exactly flaunting his ability. When interviewed earlier on the red carpet, he doesn't look quite so comfortable with Mr Zimmer as he does - did - with Morrissey!

Good catch, Seeker! :thumb:

Re: Watch: Johnny Marr and Hans Zimmer perform Inception score

No, he's definately not comfortable in that enviroment...but when has he been subjected to red carpets before? The Smiths weren't....I think he's done a pretty good track on the soundtrack! It shows Johnny Marr in a different light! Not just as the guitarest from The Smiths!

Edit: If Johnny Marr wants to do a soundtrack, he can do a soundtrack since he's Johnny fecken Marr! He can do whatever he wants!

Why did the thread about Johnny Marr writing a theme song get moved to other music, when (as this thread demonstrates) previously Marr news was considered appropriate for general discussion?
