Anybody know "The Tea Party" on this site? They are from Canada for those not in the know!

I've not heard of them, can you recommend any certain songs/albums?

cheers.

I have liked the band since they started in 1993 - mainly for the reason they they played heaps of pubs in Sydney and gained a huge following in Australia that way! Their second main fan base behind Canada is Australia. They are still great live! They have a habit of doing a "cover" in the middle of one of their own songs eg Jeff Buckley or Leonard Cohen - they did a great version of "Hallelujah",by the way!
They have had five albums released - all are very different but you should probably start on "Triptych" which is the most "commercial" - though not in a bad way! The lyrics are mainly inspired by literature, as are the Smiths, but darker, more somber literature like "The Master and Margerita" and the poem "Sister Awake". I know a lot of people hate this band because they think they are very dour and pretentious but that's crap - they are all great musicians in the pure sense of the word - they play many unusual instruments including the oud (a Turkish mandolin) and other instruments indigenous to the Middle East and Asia as well as being a great guitar rock band!

Moz fans - PASS on The Tea Party

I'm sorry, but the Tea Party are shite. Most of those who like Moz/Smiths stuff, I'm willing to wager, won't like The Tea Party. They're a bad Doors ripoff band. They used to BE a cover bacnd called "The Back Doors". The dudes are so full of themselves.

Hi there!
Yes -- I do know the Tea Party. Living in Canada, I'm subjected to them constantly. I liked them when they first came out in the early 90's but, like everyone else -- radio has ruined them. They're very talented musicians but I do agree with thehexx -- they kind of ripped of The Doors.
I've seen the Tea Party in concert quite a few times over the years. Mostly free shows here and there. Are they quite popular in Australia?

They've been coming to Australia every other year since 1993 - they consider it their second home!I've met them a couple of times and they're not prententious at all - the two Jeffs were really down to earth. I like the lyrics - they are more interesting than the Doors - even though Jeff Martin tries to look (and sound -but dont know if thats intentional)like Jim Morrison. They've never made it in America as I think the lyrics are too esoteric for a mainstream audience - although I know they are hyped in Canada.
They are more of a guys band - not many girls here like them -but I've yet to meet a guy here who doesnt. My friend, who is a band manager, said that they are one of the only bands he would pay to see.I think the variety and skill of their musicianship really gets them in - at least its not just the run of the mill one or two guitars, bass, drums and a lead singer!
