Enjoy Morrissey and his songs while he's here -- at (in my opinion) the peak of his solo career! Even if the song isn't a favourite of yours, buy the CD and show support (not just monetarily) for da greatest singer of all time.

A fantastic single in a long, LONG list of greats from the Man.

Just to reiterate, and maybe modify slightly, my post from a different thread about the LMKY single. First off, it should be said that each track features beautiful vocals from Morrissey. They are impassioned and committed. I also agree that some of these songs might be "growers", but, as it stands now, these are my impressions of the four songs:

      1. 'Let Me Kiss You' - much has been said about this already, so I'll keep it brief. I think this song tends towards the middle of the road somewhat, but is elevated by Alain's Smithsian guitar jangle between verses. By no means Moz's best single, it is charming nonetheless.

      2. 'Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice' - there are some aspects of this track that I like, but it is flawed, and I think it's relegation to b-side status was correct. On the positive side, the performance, playing and production are raw and visceral, possibly more so than any other Quarry-related track, even 'It's Hard To Walk Tall...' Morrissey's vocal is impassioned, and his lyric is mischievous and amusing - I think the part where he barks "DON'T make fun of daddy's voice", set to the backdrop of Jesse's guitar squall, is thrilling. The problem with this song, for me at any rate, is that it lacks any discernible melody. So, whilst it is raw in the best sense of the word, it's also fairly tuneless. I can see why it would go over well live though, but I think it would bomb as a stand alone single.

      3. 'Friday Mourning' - this is growing on me, but I still feel, as per my original assessment, that this is ALMOST sublime. Parts of this song very nearly soar, but not quite. As with all songs on this EP, Morrissey's vocals are beautiful and clearly truthful. The lyrics are excellent. The chorus, where Morrissey's voice rises to compliment Boz's guitar "solo", almost soars. But, the problem for me is that, as a coherent whole, and musically rather than lyrically speaking, this track isn't quite memorable enough. It nearly is - the chorus part is pretty gorgeous, but in other parts I find it to be quite generic and obvious musically, so that as a whole it's a "near miss", as someone else put it. Nevertheless, the lyrics are great: "This dawn raid soon put paid to all the things I'd whispered to you"; "When they hunt me down/When they kick me down the stairs/I see their faces lined up before me". Super lyrics, and when the music crescendoes, as it does at the point he's singing these words, it so very nearly soars. But, still I feel, not quite.

      4. 'I Am Two People' - clumsy title, but nowhere near as bad as I feared it might be. Again, the lyrics are very good indeed: "I am two people/One that you know but don't like/The other you don't know, but you don't want to/I have two faces/one of which you know/the other one for your sake I will never show". Again, excellent stuff, and gives the lie to those who claimed he is lyrically washed up (I still think some of the lyrics on the album are bad though). Musically, it's inconsistent - on the one hand, there's a lovely piano refrain, and the music accompanying the "I am two people" section is elegiac and memorable. As with 'Friday Mourning', however, other sections plod a little and tend towards the generic. Vocals are superb once again. Could well be a grower, but I believe it will only "grow" up to a certain point. Again, a near miss I feel at this stage.

So, overall, a lyrically excellent EP, but, because of the inconsistency of the music, the result is a solid set of b-sides rather than a bunch of spectacular ones. Morrissey has made better b-sides, and no doubt will do so again, and these songs are by no means disastrous. I just feel the band could be a bit more musically inventive. Lack of distinctive melody for large swathes of these tracks is the main problem, though the choruses of 'Friday Mourning' and 'I Am Two People' are very lovely.

Just my two pennorth, and obviously only an opinion, which may change, for better or worse, by the end of the week!!

I'm looking forward to geting the single and i wondered if anyones heard them are the b-sides good?

i like the main song: "let me kiss you-oo-oo er-her-her" that's how he sings it doesnt he.

on the last single he had a brilliant song called "I spend my whole life saying goodbye to an endless succession of pepole", it was like james bond, clinicle and ruthless but also charming. i hope that song is also on the b-side of this new single as it would be a nice surprise to hear it again. i hope you liked it too.

On the new album i liked 'i will kiss you' and 'irish blood english heart' and 'first of the gang to die'. i have played them again and again. On 'irish blood' theres a great bit where it goes 'whooooosh'. i dont know what it meant, it went right over my head but i think it probaply meant something. it makes you think doesnt it?

                    best wishes josh.

The intro is magnificent and the lyrics in this one are a return to form. In addition, it is such a curious and utterly original song in its structure - the verse chorus rule doesn't really apply since Morrissey mixes it up with strange coo-ing and yodelling where there ought to be a chorus. The yodelling half way through proves what a magnificent and original vocal innovator our man is. The only minor criticism is the last minute which is done 'by numbers'. But with this song and '. . . Daddy's Voice' Moz has produced two pretty special B-sides, superior to half of the album.
