Morrissey Is Back: Tour, DVDs Coming Soon

July 29, 1999, 12:00 pm PT

After almost two years of maintaining a very low profile, Morrissey is back with a slew of tour dates around the world and two retrospective DVDs (a Morrissey collection, as well as a Smiths disc) coming just in time for the holiday shopping season.

According to a source, Morrissey is about to announce an extensive international tour, which begins in Cologne, Germany on Sept. 22 and runs through December. After the Cologne date, Morrissey and his band will play four other shows in Germany (Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, and Leipzig) and another 10 dates in Poland, Italy, and France before heading to the U.S. for about six shows, including the Coachella Valley Music and Artis Festival 1999 in Coachella, Calif. near Palm Springs on Oct. 9.

The two-day festival (Oct. 9-10) also features the Chemical Brothers, Rage Against the Machine, Pavement, Ben Harper, Perry Farrell, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Gus Gus, DJ Shadow, Bis, Esthero, BT, Black-Eyed Peas, Money Mark, DJ Krush, Modest Mouse, the Angel, Roni Size, Thievery Corp., Cibo Matto, and others.

Next up is a tour of the British Isles, kicking off at Rock City in Nottingham, England on Nov. 15, which includes eight dates in Ireland, one in Swansea, Wales, two in Scotland, and seven in England. Unfortunately for London-area fans, there is no London show planned at this time. Morrissey is expected to debut several new songs, as well as classics like "Sunny" and "Speedway," according to the source.

In addition, he has been hard at work putting together a comprehensive, retrospective DVD, which is expected to span his entire solo career on Sire/Reprise and include several videos that have never been seen. The collection will be released on Reprise in conjunction with a Smiths DVD before this Christmas.

As for the coveted opening slot for the dates, Morrissey is hoping to get El Vez -- the Mexican Elvis Presley -- as the opening act. The bilingual tribute artist is someone Morrissey has seen and enjoyed while he has been living in Los Angeles.

"I've actually been living in Los Angeles for about two years," Morrissey tells the source. "This house was built in 1931 by Clark Gable for Carole Lombard." The house was later the home of such other famous faces, including author F. Scott Fitzgerald, actor/director John Schlesinger, and film producer Robert Stigwood.

Los Angeles is apparently treating the artist well. Our source says that Morrissey -- tanned, relaxed, and optimistic -- seemed in incredibly good spirits in light of his court battles with some of his former bandmates in the Smiths. Our source says that he also seemed "relieved and almost celebratory to be free of his ties to Mercury Records and is eager to start recording the new songs he has written."

"I look back upon the Mercury experience as the worst time of my life," he said nonchalantly. Several publishers, record labels, and Internet companies have approached Morrissey about recording and he is contemplating his opportunities. Morrissey's last album of new material was 1997's Maladjusted, followed by a compilation of rarities and B-sides in 1998 titled My Early Burglary Years.

Meanwhile, he's been taking drives to Death Valley, San Diego, and Mexico and claims he has developed a new-found fondness for pasta.

Does anyone know if ElVez or if Morrissey will be the headliner?
There is also a rumour that Morrissey might open for Ricki Martin in LA to win over the last few remaining latin kids that dont know about him.

Some didn't even know about the any of the maladadjusted shows, until months or years after it happened. Of course, they don’t know about this site. I guess I better start spreading the word…

No London shows? I have never had the honour of attending a Moz show because I only got heavily into him around 1/98.

But I'd travel anywhere in the world for the pleasure (beg, steal or borrow!!!).

While I'm elated at the news, I would argue the fact that this reporter could deem "Sunny" and "Speedway" as classics...they are rather recent recordings, eh? I would understand if it was "Everyday" or "Suedehead".

I 've said it before and I'll say it again. I think Morrissey's next album is going to surprise alot of us. Now that I think of it it might catch a little media tention? Morrissey I wish I was able to tell you that Pittsburgh wants to see you do a show!!!

Speaking of Ricky Martin (someone mentioned his name) , the more I see him on t.v. the more it strikes me that his hair style looks so much like Moz's. Well in his earlier years. I saw him on one of those entertainment or Hollywood shows and his hair was just like Morrissey's was when he was the Smiths. I'm wondering if there ever were alot of girls and women going that crazy over Morrissey.

Poland? That is new and different.

At any rate, I hope I can pull off disappearing without suspicion after I lie to a friend (on a completely unrelated reason) why I'm not travelling with him somewhere else and going solo on this....

this is a long wait, but hey....I'm much improved over last time. Among other things, I'm actually not a flakey, barely employed slob living all by myself in a rat hole in West Texas!!!!

Am I the only person that finds this news strange? A tour with out a record label and without a record sounds fishy to say the leaset. Is Morrissey going to spend his own money on touring around the world? Usually the record company helps pay for the tour. Is he promoting the DVD release? Why nobody has a DVD player. Certainly not enough for the lable to really make money off of the sale. Seven shows in Ireland? Hello! Sounds strange.

How do you know? Moz loves Ireland and has a house there, although of course it is another tax haven ;) His last show was in Battersea and Moz likes playing unconventional venues, there will be a show in London eventually as this is only a warm-up pre-album tour, there will no doubt be a Southern date nearby. Earlier points - Chris Isaak is a bit like Moz, image-wise and with the voice, Presley/Orbinson influenced, although less angst ridden, there's no way he'll play Tony The Pony, Bengali In Platforms which are dreadful anyway and Maudlin Street which would be great but unlikely, he doesn't even do Suedehead anymore does he? but I agree about old songs, Hairdresser On Fire, Sister I'm A Poet, Dissappointed would be fab for example, pity we can't request what he sings lol, oh and what are they saying about Sunny and Speedway being classics, they're hardly the most obvious ones, Sunny is good but not exactly his best, I agree about Speedway though even if it's rather inaccessible.

GERMANY SWINGS

Moz who doesnt like Germany so much as we know (in fact a sad fact but we do understand)) comes to this country for about four/five gicks- IT MUST
and !!! - he returns to the town (after the Kill-Uncle-Tour) which includes - in my eyes - most of the Mo-Man-followers in Germany: COLOGNE.
Cologne is organizing Smiths/Moz-Party regulary .

By the way: greetings to Peter Melis the Dagenham Dave of Belgium.
We will come to ANTWERP-Event
-cause we must!

Am I not alone in Poland? I thought everybody here listens to Spice Girls. Just walk into the nearest CD store. "The Smiths? Isn`t it a name of the new Offspring single? Oh, what a funny band. And their latest video. Me and my fiancee were laughing our heads off."
Well, feel terribly lonely in Poland. It's like living in Utah, New Zealand or Norway.
Anyway, Jacek, you tried to console me - thanks.

A d.j. on our local station suggested that since Culture Club, The Cult, Eurythmics and various other bands are reuniting that Johnny Marr and Morrissey should as well. HEAR-HEAR !!!!!!!!! I saw Moz in Atlanta on the Maladjusted tour as well and I swore that if he's ever within reasonable driving distance, I'm there !!! Is California reasonable from Georgia ? HELL YES !!!!!

Well, I do believe we've gotten what we've wanted this time. Hmm, seeing that the Deftones have covered Moz's songs and old Smiths songs, I wonder if he'll do a take on "Be Quiet And Drive" or "My Own Summer (Shove It)", something to ponder...

TO MOZ FAN FROM POLAND AND EVERYBODY ELSE TOO...
I HAVE TO DEFEND HONOUR OF MY COUNTRY...

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY SAYING THAT EVERYBODY IN POLAND LISTENS TO SPICE GIRLS ?
MAJORITY OF MY FRIENDS WONDER HOW CAN I LISTEN TO SUCH A POPPY/JINGLE JANGLE MUSIC AS SMITHS....
I LOVE FREAK OUT MUSIC TOO, BUT WHAT ONE CAN DO HAVING DELIGHT OF LISTENING TO BEST GROUP EVER...
MOST OF MODEREN MUSIC SEEMS SO TRIVIAL IN COMPARISON...

DOES SOMEBODY FROM GERMANY KNOW STH MORE ABOUT GERMAN GIGS ( I DONT BELIEVE IN GIG IN POLAND )
DO ANY OTHER SOURCES E.G. IN GERMANY THAN MORRISEY- SOLO CONFIRM THIS TOUR????

BERLIN IS SO NEAR...
ILL BE GRATEFUL FOR ANY INFORMATIONS

If Morrisey desides to give in to this new tech armagedon, he'll soon be performing with digital masters like the chemical brothers... oh wait he's already gonna do this. Maybe He'll join Atari teenage riot to end his carrer and cling to his youth.

Good to see he's going back on the road. The only thing that bothers me is that the road never seems to go to Holland anymore. Last time he played there was 1990!!

Doesn't Mozz like Amsterdam??

I have some poetry if you would like to read it. I'm afraid that I don't to say to you. I don't have too many friends. Would you like to talk, write to me and let me bore you to death about myself, my books, my music, my life.
Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart for your attention.
