In May 2003, Morrissey signed to Sanctuary Records ("Fax to Janice Long...", "Sanctuary confirms..."), after years of rumors and speculation. Morrissey's last release was on Mercury Records in 1997. Recording started late in the year with producer Jerry Finn ("Jerry Finn signed on..."), with a release target of mid 2004 ("Moz record 'won't be out until next May or so' according to producer Jerry Finn").

"The Importance Of Being Morrissey" documentary aired in June on Channel 4 in the UK (coverage).

Releases:
"Under The Influence: Morrissey", a compilation of Morrissey's influences, was released in May on DMC (coverage). Books: "Saint Morrissey" by Mark Simpson and "How Soon Is Never?" by Marc Spitz, "The Smiths' Meat is Murder" by Joe Pernice. Tribute album: "The String Quartet Tribute to The Smiths".

Interviews: Word magazine (June 2003). City Life (June 2003), i-D magazine (July 2003) (scan).

The year was a bit rough for the site. On May 1 I was served a "cease and desist" by Morrissey's lawyers which threatened litigation and threatened to shut down the site if a thread of user postings was not removed by the end of the day (link). I maintained my policy of not removing posts on the site, got legal representation and have not heard anything further since then.

2004 looks to be a pivotal year as we look forward to the first new release since 1997.

Check out this interview with Boz Boorer from New Orleans monthly Where Y'At-- www.whereyat.net The interview precedes Boz's appearances in New Orleans at Club 735 on Dec. 30th (with the Bozmen) and January 2nd (at el Matador--solo acoustic).

Excerpt:

Who is your favorite person to play with?
Morrissey. Always the best, musically, audience-wise and reception-wise.

Do you usually write for yourself, and then consider giving them to someone else?
I write mostly for Moz (Morrissey).

Season 1 of Kids in the Hall was just released on DVD, and on one of the two commentary tracks, Kevin McDonald invokes Morrissey's name in reference to a supine pose by fellow troupe-mate, Scott Thompson. Thematically, the commented shot resembles scenes from November Spawned a Monster; though, it should be noted that the Kids in the Hall segment was created before the "November" video. An image and mp3 of the DVD audio segment are attached.

Intersting tid bit...
Just got my 20 Gig I-POD this weekend, and upon reading the instructions, I discovered a pseudo-reference to a Smiths song. In the instruction booklet, it tells you how to select a song using your I-Pod. One of the songs they use as an example is Girlfriend in Sonoma (of course a play on Girlfriend in a Coma)!
Thought it was interesting to see the IPod group use a Smiths reference.

The Guide is the weekly listings magazine that comes with the national newspaper The Guardian here in the UK. This week there is a round-up of the best music books of the year, by Ian Gittins. 'Saint Morrissey' is one of the five chosen, along with John Harris's 'The Last Party', Frank Owen's 'Clubland Confidential' Mark Pytlik's 'Bjork:Wow And Flutter' and Sting - Broken Music.

The review in full:

MARK SIMPSON Saint Morrissey (SAF, £16.99)
Freely admitting to an adolescence both elevated and ruined by the bequiffed one, the erudite Simpson gives a compelling account of his youthful - and adult - fascination with the bard of Whalley Range/Beverly Hills: "The first Smiths album, filled me with a lust to go out shoplifting expensive perfume with which to spray bus shelters". His conclusion? "Morrissey is a Northern Woman, and a queer fish". A nimble essay which gives fandom a good name.
Ian Gittins.
