Posted by Mr.Improper on the general discussion board (link to online article from Weiß), a picture of Morrissey with Dan Mathews that appeared in the Orange County Weekly (July 25 -31). Morrissey is namedropped in the article, nothing much else. Dan's interview with Morrissey for PETA was published in Sept. 2002 (link).

In the August edition of X-Ray magazine (radio station Xfm's music mag) I came across this:

Entitled Movement of the Month, with a crude cut and paste job of Moz's head on a boxer - "Spurred on by the recent TV documentary, Morrissey: Muscles, Tattoos and Men on Mopeds, or whatever it was called, and perky publicity on the back of his new compilation, Party on E with Mozza, young music fans and beer guts across Britain have once again been discussing Morrissey. Well and truly gone is the gladioli-waving, pale-skinned weed of yore, now replaced by the ex-pugilist type living in L.A. To be a Morrissey fan, 2003, follow these guidelines: Sit in the sun whenever it's out. Join the T.A, for the strength, and do 60 chin-ups every morning. Gurn like a bare-knuckle fighter when quizzed about your sexuality. Spend £30 a day on posh shaves at a celeb barber. Buy a Hollywood mansion and sleep in the room Clark Gable used to shag in. Secretly listen to ragga through an ipod. Ride a Vespa without a helmet, cos it's hard. Tell The Thrills they're great and get a load of free press off it. Hang out with tough latino youths and tell them you 'understand their plight'. Do not offer to buy them a meat burrito."

Well I didn't like that one bit. Bastards.

We're doing the release party for Rarities Vol. 2 which was to feature an unreleased live recording of Shakespeare's Sister.

We received our advanced copies this weekend and the track is not on there. It looks like it was pulled at the last minute. All of the other tracks originally listed are on there. The track listing has been revised on the Rarities website.

Genuis Comic book scribe Alan Moore along with artist J.H Williams has had an ongoing reference to Morrissey in the monthly comic book Promethea.

The story takes place in 1999 in a world similar but not quite the same as our own. In issue four of the series we see a shot inside the bedroom of the main character - Sophie Bangs (great name eh?) who is the alter ego of Promethea - on her wall is a poster of the pop star 'Les Miserable' who looks more than familiar. Near Profile view - Side burns - quiff, etc.

Much later in issue 19 a performance is announced between 'Les Miserable' and another band called 'Limp' - the following is said

"Les Miserable's only statement was "The one thing worse than being stalked about is NOT being stalked about" -

A few issues later through captions of a TV news program, we learn that Les Miserable has called off the show

"following what doctors called a severe bout of elation"

"asked to comment Miserable said "We are all of us in Gautier, but some of us look like stars."

  - its clear that the much modernized quotes, originally by you know who, and imagery and mood are all inspired by Morrissey. Even though its a joke at Mozs expense its all in good fun and quite funny. There are a few issues left before the planned armageddom and the end of the Promethea universe and comic book series. Moore may mention Les Miserable again before then - I'll send a note if its significant enough.

The Grave Maurice Pub has now put Moz's Under the Influence poster in their window, as it's on my bus route home I thought I'd take a few snaps, attached. I didn't know until recently, [this is a Moz/Krays connection] that The Blind Beggar Pub is only about 100 yds further up the road, on the same side as The Grave Maurice!

A ROYAL FLASH
Jul 23 2003
By Jane Kerr, Royal Reporter

A TEENAGER who dropped his trousers at the Queen's garden party and ran around shouting "Wahey", today offered his apologies.

The 17-year-old dashed across the Buckingham Palace lawn towards the Queen in his T-shirt yesterday.
