From Sunday's Observer magazine (6/7/03 - What happened next?) - Viv Nicholson on Morrissey:

I've long been associated in people's mind with Morrissey. The first time I met him was in Blackpool after he sent me an invitation to go see him. When I walked towards the venue where he was playing, I was quite astounded when I saw all these big effigies of me. I thought, Wow, he only asked for a little photograph for the record cover, and there were all these posters of me all over the place. When I went in, I was asked to go up on stage. There was this young man wearing a hearing aid and thick-rimmed spectacles with a tree hanging out of his backside, and I thought, My goodness, who is that? It was Morrissey. Wow, I thought, here's two weirdos together.

I said, 'Shall we get married?' and he said, 'Yes.' He was so strange, but that was his gimmick.

I actually found him to be a really nice guy.

Here are the pictures from our local paper, the Bradford Telegraph & Argus (8th July). Article - page 1, page 2. The pictures of me are screen-grabs, that's why they look a little crappy.

As for the cartoon (A very poor quality Morrissey) - you need to know that Smiths (or, more properly W H Smiths) is a chain of book and stationery stores in the UK.

The June 2nd edition of the UK political weekly "The New Statesman" contained a two page article on The Smiths - "pop's antidote to early Thatcherism".

Dan B. Pearl writes:

Many users here will have been mortified -- or enraged -- to find that their CD copy of Under the influence won't play on their computer, car stereo or other device. Especially if they don't even have the kind of CD player the technology works with, or if they want to listen to it on their iPods, or while working on their computer, or whatever.

Well, one of the finest bloggers on the web took action:
I sent off a letter of complaint to DMC. Today, I received an email from them, apologising for the situation and offering to mail me a newly pressed Red Book-compliant copy of the CD (sans artwork/liner notes) to replace the drink coaster I had purchased. Now that's what I call customer service.

nb: Morrissey's is not the only album crippled in this way, but people are doing something about it.

I was at the Ben Lee/Fountains of Wayne show in Atlanta on Sunday. Ben Lee, who was opening, closed his set with an excellent cover of "Shoplifters." It was a pretty straightforward cover - he said it was their first time playing it together - except for a few extra "hand it over's" at the end.

Lloyd H. Miller writes:

Black on the Outside, Brooklyn's own Smiths tribute band, returns Monday, July 14th at the BQE Lounge in Williamsburg.

We're playing as part of their regular Monday party the Situation hosted by d.j.s Ropstyle, Forest, fuckup, and Deathgrip. They promise lots of obscure new wave, post-punk, ol skool punk, and some electro before and after the band.

The night starts at 9:30. Black on the Outside plays at 10:30.

There's no cover.

The BQE Lounge is located at 300 North 6th Street near Meeker. Take the L or the G to the Metropolitan / Lorimer stop. More complete directions are available at www.bqelounge.com.
