I would be shocked if you are on the next LP. Morrissey surely realizes someone has to go after the travesty of dullness that is Years Of Refusal. Hopefully it will be you.

    Dear Jesse,

I'm pissed at the third-rate session player who contributes absolutely nothing to the band.

I'm not sure what is worse: your guitar tone or your horrid songwriting, which is extremely limited to the usual boring and dry-sounding "Jesse rockers."

The opening riff of "Sorry Doesn't Help" could have been written by my six-year old nephew.

Do yourself a favor. Get out of the band.

    Sincerely,
    A Picnic by the Motorway

P.S. From what you've read so far, I'm sure you know by now that you're certainly not well-liked by the fans. On "I'm OK By Myself" I noticed you attempted to regurgitate the bass line of "Sweet and Tender Hooligans." Trying to do these sorts of things on future attempts will not win you over with us. You're not even in the same league as Johnny, so don't even try.

And don't get me started on the Simon Gallup-wannabe bass player!

  • Let's put to one side the remarks attributed to Jesse Tobias as they were intended to be 'private' to his guests: I haven't read them. If he writes prose as he writes chords, there is simply no need to.

If any recording artist decides to 'build the buzz' in a pre-release period by passing completed copies of CDs to 'trusted' journalists, business associates, friends, corporate sponsors and the like, then they need to accept the possible consequences: Betrayal. Leaks. Given Morrissey's recorded comments on his dealings with business and press associates, it's 'curious' to see he has, once again, been so credulous.

By adopting/endorsing this approach Morrissey still appears to mentally inhabit a world of physical record stores, physical formats such as CD's and 'official' press and p.r campaigns. Well, it's no longer 1988. Any vaguely competent management would have ensured only low-bitrate minute-long snippets of songs were available in press review packs.

As I said on another thread: 'It is very sad that this has leaked prematurely. It must be so frustrating for artists to try to build momentum only to have the effort ruined by insider sabotage. We seem to be in the same territory as Hollywood movies with spoilers and rumours detracting from the impact of every musical release. In that respect, the Radiohead strategy appears to be the best way of dealing with this new situation.' Actually, Radiohead gouged their audience into 'donating' money for low bit-rate copies which is ethically dubious, to put it mildly.

There was nothing to stop Morrissey keeping this securely under wraps and announcing it 10 days before it's release. It's not as if the path hasn't been clearly set out by other innovators. But he appears to be a desperately incompetent businessman and insecure 'artist' and cannot seem to function without 'the star-making machinery behind the popular song'. Hence, 7 year sulks between contractual obligations followed by botched product launches ('robbed' of Keane-ly coveted #1 slot for You Are The Quarry being released on a wet Wednesday or whatever it was). Moving on. David Byrne has grasped the nettle with this whole nonsense as the following link shows:

    http://www.everythingthathappens.com/order.html

So, his audience can order a physical CD in standard or luxury format whilst having immediate access to either low quality MP3 or lossless FLAC copies until they can grab hold of the UPS man's bulging package.(No sniggering at the back, class!) David Byrne is, of course, an entirely different proposition to Morrissey in that he is a full-on architect of his 'gesamtkunstwerk' rather than a passive-aggressive part-time member of the project management team. His audience are, from my observations, genuine 'patrons' rather than pathologic 'fans'. I doubt his sales are even remotely affected by 'thieving' downloaders, but I don't have access to his business plan/profitability model to confirm this intuition.

In order to protect the royalty income streams of employees such as Jesse Tobias, Morrissey needs to urgently review the Critical Path Analysis for this 'Years of Refusal' launch-scenario, tweaking milestones appropriately. Or employ a management team capable of doing so on his behalf. A rational response to Jesse's misguided distress would be to see these tracks on Itunes within the next few hours. Of course, many artists deliberately leak their own work as revenge on their managements and labels as part of their pseudo-rebellion against self-imposed 'corporate rock-whore radio friendly unit shifter' slavery. But that's too boring to even bother discussing.

I have no intention of responding to redundant comments on my superbly insightful analysis. The 'usual suspects' will just have to get their face-time attention whore fixes somewhere else today.

    Regards

Jesse is a really nice person and I like a lot of the songs that him and Morrissey, the pair, have conjured up together. The songs are really well written and you things are just conformists. How many of you are as talented as Jesse or Morrissey – that’s what I thought. Yous infest yourselves on here, more infestations. The game is on – and Jesse will be the one on stage with Morrissey, not you things. How do you know that God is not on these boards – God is going to judge you with your manifestations and mean spirited unjustified judgments. What if it is God …

  • I somehow don't really feel bad about getting my hands on the album. I HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR IT!!!!!!!! Leaking the album is such a sin but forcing people to buy a pre-release is not! That was a crafty move by the label to get people to pre-order the release so it goes up in the charts. The pre-sale was for anybody who wanted to add the price of the album to the ticket price. Let's call it what it is "ripping people off"! Why is that kind of crap not pointed out to the Jessie's of the world? He is making money off every ticket sold and every album bought. Everyone is still going to buy it when it comes out. If they weren't going to buy it then they would have just gotten it from a friend or riped it from some free site. So stop all the crying. These idiot musician's who are doing what they love bitching about people downloading the album are just so ungreatful. Yes, I feel so bad that you are blessed to be able to tour the world and make great money while playing for adoring crowds. Try working at McDonald's and having no futre. Now picutre yourself there! • I think that all the hassle is simply part of the promotional hype. No one could be so naive thinking that when promo copies are sent out they won´t be available for download the very next day. Morrissey fans may download the album illegally but still buy it. And most of them will probably buy all available formats of it. At least that´s what I´ll do. Random listeners won´t download it anyway.

  • I don't agree with all this 'flamebait'/'insightful' etc stuff that's been on here lately. Surely the point of this site is to allow people to express personal opinions. Why must some opinions then be subjected to this kind of evaluation? All opinions here are valid, why rate them? Just let people speak their minds and let others form their own opinions of the comments and respond in kind. I'm sorry, but this kind of thing really is quite condescending, even to posters whose comments are evaluated as 'funny' or 'interesting'. Comments are automatically valid; they don't need to be VALIDATED. It's all subjective anyway. I mean, what, exactly, is the criteria for someone's comment to be deemed 'funny' or whatever. I've read some comments that were supposedly 'insightful' but were, in my opinion, anything but insightful. A hands off approach would be best.
