Here is a scan of a news item from the new issue of Mojo which has details on the new Smiths book and the proposed boxset, and Warner also has plans to remaster the Smiths albums and release them in 2-CD editions and release all of their singles on vinyl, in 7- and 12- inch formats.

There is one page about the Smiths in the october edition of Mojo.

"WHAT GOES ON !-(page 14.)
THEY CAN SMILE ABOUT IT NOW.

Photo book captures The Smiths in their first flush. Plus, is the band's long awaited box set finally ready?
However long a major band lasts, there is something ineffably alluring about their first photographs. Paul Slattery was on hand for The Smiths'infancy and his new book:The Smiths:The Early Years, presents edited but copious highlights. It covers 1983 and 1984, years when Slattery photographed the group on eight separate occasions. There are handsome live shots in abundance from Glastonbury, Paris and London-Morrissey's quiff, you notice, has yet to come to full glory at the May 1983 show at the University of London-and numerous posed group shots, including this cheery image of Morrissey and Johnny Marr at the Manchester Central station, also from May 1983.An extended sequence of The Smiths backstage at The University of East Anglia in February 1984, meanwhile, shows uncommon scenes of the band pre and post-gig.

Also stirring up the band's meteoric but brief lifetime are indications that a 4-CD box set of rarities and remastered albums may at least be appearing. Rumoured since 2001, and reputedly held up by in-band disagreement, the box set has now been approved by Morrissey and Marr.

"There isn't really that much unreleased music", Marr told Mojo, "but there's good versions of songs, of golden oldies, stripped down original takes before lots of overdubs went on-just the three of us putting down the take and the vocal and that's it.Those things sound really, really good. And there's a lot of great live stuff' cos we were a phenomenal live band".

A source from Warner said that, contrary to popular belief, the label is keen to see the remastered albums available again and that plans also include releasing 2-CD editions of The Smiths' albums and all of their singles on vinyl, in 7- and 12-inch formats."

The Smiths: The Early Years by Paul Slattery is published by Omnibus at £19.95.

  • Last time I read about this box set it was mentioned that a live DVD would be in it. Is that still the plan?

  • is from an older interview, it's nothing new. If the big record companies are involved you're only going to get re-mastered albums and singles on CD. It shows how much moz and marr have lost control of their own music, so contrary to their beliefs when they were the smiths. didn't they control every release back then?

    Here's what we SHOULD have:
    Re-mastered albums and singles
Official release of Troy Tate sessions.
All the unreleased BBC sessions (jensen/Peel)
The full Rank concert with the 7 missing songs
    and the following TV concerts
    Derby Assembly Rooms 83
    Rockpalast 84
    Arsenal Barcelona 85
    Madrid 85
plus a full anthology of all the tv interviews and features.

Most hardcore fans will obviously have all of the above in unofficial format but it would be nice to have it all together in a box set.

oh, and Mike Joyce's box of demos would be good. I'd consider selling my soul to the devil in return for the above:)

  • what's the point in repressing the singles, really? they're not technically "in print", but anyone who wants them (which is mostly vinylheads/completists, ie. not your average, more "casual" fan) can still easily get them, for reasonably cheap...

i kind of like the idea of remastered cds though, maybe rather than a boxset they could just do a series of remastered cds, with bonustracks and nice booklets (ala the ramones reissues). throw in a nice dvd with a well-made, official documentary and a pro-filmed liveshow or two, and i'll be more than happy.

of course a boxset would be nice too (and quite overdue, really). every diehard fan is obviously going to have their own far-fetched, utopian idea of what should be on it, and none of them/us will be completely pleased... but i think the tate-demos and radio-sessions should be a given.

really interested in hearing those stripped-down, early versions of the songs...though i suspect they might not be too different from the live versions.

  • Can someone explain the ins and outs of who owns what here? The last interview with Marr in Word magazine said that Moz and Marr had been in touch about releasing / remastering old material, and they weren't happy about how Warner had treated The Smiths legacy. Can they not take their own songs elsewhere? Does Joyce get the last say in what happens, or would Moz and Marr have to buy Warners out of their back catalogue? It just seems like, far from Moz and Marr being able to wrest control of The Smiths work, they're only partially consulted, and then they're disappointed when the record company releases yet another poorly constructed compilation. There's also the obvious elephant in the room in the shape of royalties; Morrissey informed us that for every Smiths album or piece of merchandise sold in the UK, Mike Joyce gets the royalties and the others see little, if any money. So if Moz is in talks with Warner and Marr to make sure the record company get this release right, then he's obviously doing it for the love of the bands legacy, and ignoring the fact he'll get peanuts from it.
