I was reading the news in an Argentinian newspaper website (www.clarin.com). Every Friday they put a section called "Si!" (YES, in English) with music related articles (most of them).

Today (January 13) they presented an interview with Peter Hook, who play bass on New Order, and is actually on tour as a DJ. The mentioned interview was made in Punta del Este, Uruguay. When he was asked "What music do people ask you to play?" he's response was "The Smiths. I hate The Smiths. I hate Morrissey and the people get mad at that". Full interview here (although that's the only part about Morrissey/Smiths):

"Odio que pidan Smiths" - Clarín.com

—¿Qué te piden?
—The Smiths. Odio a Smiths. Odio a Morrissey y se enojan. Tengo pocos discos porque sólo toco lo que me gusta.

  • Shame he doesn't like them, his loss. He's allowed to like what he wants though.

Let's hope no idiots post saying "NEW ORDER / JOY DIVSION SUCK, fuck you Pete!"

  • Peter Hook hates Morrissey/ The Smiths.... We all know what a great influence the bass player of New Order is... I say we kick the Morrissey habit as well! DEATH TO MORRISSEY!!

  • I had to interview him once when he was promoting his world changing semi-solo project Monaco. Anyone remember that... there's no reason why you should. He was the most awkward, miserable, bitter and difficult person I have ever interviewed. It was one of my first assignments and I think he could smell blood and made it as unpleasant as possible. I wouldn't give a rat's arse what that man thinks about anything or even if he is still breathing...

  • Peter Hook doesn't mean anything for me. There's no doubt Moz and The Smiths is much much much more influential than the bands Peter plays/ed with. Even The Killers name Morrissey and Smiths as major influences than the others (from the 80's). What really gets him pissed off is the recurrent requesting of Smiths' songs more than New Order/J.Division does. Ha ha ha! Is there a single fucking idiot in this world who's going to waste time learning to play a guitar listening to New Order or J.Division? By the way, tell me a Hook's bass line better than Andy's This Charming Man!!! C'mon, tell me!

  • This is somewhat skewed it seems. I spent quite a few hours with Peter Hook a couple of months ago, and he stated he really wasn't into The Smiths but never mentioned hating them. He is also a very nice guy with a great talent for playing the bass and dj'ing...

  • Hook is a grumpy old sod. So what if he doesn't like Moz? New Order are still one of the best bands ever.

  • The only reason Hooky is at all successful is because of Ian Curtis. The Mike Joyce of Joy Division if you like.

  • I'm starting to hate Morrissey and the Smiths too

Come on, guys, Johnny Marr wrote some amazing pop music and is definitely talented but Morrissey's always been a mediocre lyricist who appeals to self-obsessed adolescents and self-conscious critics and you know it so let's all stop posting here forever

  • I never understood why musicians go around and DJ. Rourke and Joyce did this too. It seems pretty shameless to me to go around and say, I am (insert name; e..g., Rourke, Joyce, Hook etc.), and therefore, listen to the records I have selected.

I for one could care less, although I am going to see Hook DJ in San Diego. Luckily, I am going to see the Editors, and Hook just happens to be there.

Maybe I will toss him a Smiths single to piss him off. Maybe I will ask him whether this DJ'ing gig pays the bills.

  • Morrissey doesn't need this fucker to play his songs, it's an honor to play a Smiths/Moz song if he just said oh I don't carry any Smiths/Moz songs people would just not hire him as a DJ so Hook should just start liking Morrissey. I think maybe he's mad people don't ask for any New Order/Joy division songs that must feel really bad when they don't request your songs

  • Its one guy with one unexplained opinion. Lets not get defensive over pointless arguments. Recent posts are really emphasizing on bashing anyone who hates Morrissey. What is even worse are those who defend him as if hes the best artist ever in the universe!
