I still think that peta, as a whole, championed many great causes, with due credit. I do, however, feel that Ingrid Newkirk is an asshole. Her stance on bsl(breed specific law) is appalling:

The following are Ingrid Newkirk's own words:

"People have no idea that at many animal shelters across the country, any "pit bull" who comes through the front door goes out the back door -- in a body bag...This news shocks and outrages the compassionate dog-lover. ..Here's another shocker: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the very people who are trying to get you to denounce the killing of chickens for the table, foxes for fur, or frogs for dissection, supports the pit bull policy..."

"Pit bulls are perhaps the most abused dogs on the planet. These days, they are kept for protection by almost every drug dealer and pimp in every major city and beyond. You can drive into any depressed area
and see them being used as cheap burglar alarms, wearing heavy logging chains around their necks (they easily break regular collars and harnesses), attached to a stake or metal drum or rundown doghouse without a floor and with holes in the roof. Bored juveniles sic them on cats, neighbors' small dogs and even children."

"Those who argue against the euthanasia policy for pit bull dogs are naive."

"I have scars on my leg and arm from my own encounter with a pit. Many are loving and will kiss on sight, but many are unpredictable."

"People who genuinely care about dogs won't be affected by a ban on pits. They can go to the shelter and save one of the countless other breeds and lovable mutts sitting on death row through no fault of their own."

"We can only stop killing pits if we stop creating new ones. Legislators, please take note. "

"Pet ownership is an absolutely abysmal situation brought about by human manipulation."

I'm sure she loves what is going in Denver at the monent...... Maybe she needs her head examined?

  • A little word of warning to anyone thinking of paying out $500 for a ticket just to see Morrissey. Someone on www.morrisseymusic.com said they contacted PETA to ask if Moz would be there and got the following response:

“Morrissey is going to be receiving the Linda McCartney Memorial Award for all of his contributions to animal rights and PeTA over the last 25 years. It isn't likely that Morrissey is going to be able to make the event due to the fact that he'll be recording. However - since we've been inundated by Morrissey fans who are looking to acknowledge Morrissey for his animal protection work, for those who buy tickets to the event to honor him, we'll be setting up a camera to record a 30-second personal greeting from his fans which will be sent to Morrissey the week after the event.”

(The good news though in that statement is further confirmation that he's recording! Fingers crossed for some new material soon...)

    • Nice sleuthing Zelda, though I'd already matched Morrissey up with Moby to hang out with for easy like-minded company rather than having to rely on the formal entertainments at these sorts of events. He'd probably knows most of them already. Somehow I doubt he’d have much to say to Pamela Anderson etc!

I met an Italian woman last week who co-founded an animal rights organisation there, ‘altaspecia’, something like that, meaning ‘beyond species. She credited Moz’ work with PETA, she might even be there.

Right posh do, if worthwhile! The news about recording is promising; all's in hand indeed.
