As a big fan of both Belle & Sebastian and The Smiths, I was pleasantly surprized to see that Stuart of B&S was wearing the Hatful of Hollow T-shirt while being interviewed on their newest DVD Release (Entitled Fans Only).

This was no quick shot either, in the scene, B&S are being interviewed on a Brazillian television show and Stuart is sitting on the couch proudly sporting his Smiths T-shirt. Just a quick FYI...

  • Good timing. I can't wait to go and watch it. They're one awesome live act.

  • In a similar occurence; I saw the band Mum in San Francisco, and while waiting for the bus after the show, my friend and I spotted a figure we assumed looked just like the Little Prince. My friend corrected me, "that's Stuart Murdoch!" Of course, we both loved Belle and Sebastian, so we tried to think of a way that would not be so humiliating to introduce ourselves to him.

However, like fools, we sang "There is a Light," and he looked over at us, quite blatantly actually. My friend asked him "Are you Stu?" and of course, he replied yes.

During the bus ride we talked about how much we all loved the Queen is Dead, and Stuart sang a little of Jonathan Richman's new song "Take Me to the Plaza."

He was pretty charming in person, and seemed earnest about talking to us, especially about the Smiths. He also said, that if I wanted to send him any letters, he would read them himself.

I actually have some screen captures of the Smiths T-shirt: vu.morrissey-solo.com [morrissey-solo.com]

There is one other Smiths reference, I think it is in the video for A Century of Fakers, someone is wearing the Marr/Morrissey flowers T-shirt.

Are you torn in two when I talk to you? Because I'm torn in three when you talk to me.
  • I can't remember where, but earlier than the footage from Brazil, there is another person (not Stuart) walking around with a Smiths shirt on.

In addition to aforementioned Smiths T-shirt that Stuart Murdoch wore on Programo de Jo (Brazil) on the "For Fans Only" DVD, he begins to mention Morrissey in one of his press conferences featured on the DVD. He is answering a question during a London press stint, when he says, "As Morrissey once said, ..." He is then cut off by Chris Geddes (piano of B&S) who launches in on some other topic. Stuart pops back by saying "I was just about to quote"....and he leaves it at that. For the record, the Smiths t-shirt featured in the clip on the DVD is a white "Hatful" shirt that is small on Stu and quite old looking...Probably an original.

  • Well, you should, because outside of The Trashcan Sinatras, they're the closest thing we have left of The Smiths...

Oh, The Trashcan's have a new LP out this spring/early summer...dear God, my emotions will fly this summer...please let every expectation be blessed with a realization...

For all these things we pray...Amen.

  • I think threads reporting on musicians wearing Smiths shirts should be abolished forever.

  • I read your message, and as soon as i got off work i went home and watched for the brazilian talk show on Fans Only,(which is a marvelous production) and sure enough there's lovable, adorable Stuart, clad in light blue corduroys and the hat full of hollow tee. That talk show host said the "F" word too. He was pretty funny.
