On Saturday 29th November, Johnny Marr appeared on Sky One's football programme 'Soccer AM'. Marr was briefly quizzed about his time in The Smiths and was very positive about what they had achieved. The only slightly negative undertone was his implication that Morrissey would never allow him to alter the lyrics during the song writing process. Probably the most interesting question he was asked was "..who did he (Marr) believe was the best frontman ever?" Marr's response after a brief pause for thought?....Mick Jagger circa late 1960's. Surely he cannot be serious?

As an fyi, did anyone check out the drummer from 'No Doubt' sporting the classic 'Queen is Dead' T-shirt during a recent interview with MTV. Seems like it's becoming 'cool' again to be a Smiths fan?

  • Johnny Marr is a musical genius and if he says Mick Jagger then it is Mick Jagger. I would also say that David Lee Roth is also in that rare space as one of the very best frontman after seeing him on his last tour.

  • Moz didn't let Marr play around with any of the Smiths' lyrics. Otherwise we would've ended up with the illiterate, third-rate, sub-Oasis-B-side nonsense that was the lyrics on The Healer.

  • You know, I saw that piece where the No Doubt was wearing a Smiths t-shirt. Given the last poll as well, more and more bands are either starting to recognize the Smiths a huge musical influence or they just want to be "cool" to think so. I hope it's the first.

My love, wherever you are, Whatever you are...Don't lose faith...I know it's gonna happen someday...
  • The Stones never were as good songwriters as the Beatles, Mick Jagger never wanted to be remembered as a great lyricist and we all see what they are from now, 2003 : 60-something-rock-and-roll band playing arenas under the rain, almost stuck by the mud in their wheelchairs. There are probably more wrinkles on Jagger's face than keys in all the Stones songs put together. Whatever.

Although I never got the chance to see that particular band live at the peek of their fame (cause I wasn't born in the late 60's), I saw many footages of their gigs, heard many tapes, saw them in the 90's and you have to face the truth : the Stones were and still are amazing on stage. While our Moz hardly gives you an 1 hour gig, they grant 2 and a half hour of non-stop hits, even at their age !

One can only imagine what it was like when they were all 20.

We all know what the Rolling Stones are now, just like we all know there's nothing to expect from their recent albums, but it doesn't debase what they once were.

Bowie wouldn't have slept with a lousy singer, would he ?

  • JM has been on SoccerAM before, just a few months ago. What was really frustrating about the interview on saturday was that everytime he was going to say something about the Smiths, Tim interrupted him and asked him about something else. He did say that he was happier now than ever to a point blank question and that The Smiths would never be a band again, but he was in the middle of answering a question about do you still get on with Morrissey when Tim barged in with a joke and the question was forgotten. That happened 2 or 3 times.

  • i think his name is adrian.

anyhow, i've constantly seen him on television or in magazines stating how big of an influence 80s music (the smiths, the cure, dm) are to him so he's not fronting. maybe some of the other acts are, but i think he's sincere.

    i dunno.

  • Jagger late 60s period? Well, best ever who knows! But He was certainly something in his time. We all know who most of the people on this sight think is No.1(myself included), but Jagger is up there. I don't care whay age he is (16 years older than Moz), I saw him in September and he was great!

  • Maybe they will cover (rip off) one of morrisey's or some of the smith's material as an "homage," just like they did with that perfectly o.k Talk Talk single. It isn't enough that they're one of the biggest pop bands out there, they still feel the need to rip off the groups best song to add to their repetoire. I've been listening to no doubt for several years now and have seen them 2 or 3 times. They are also good musicians. But over the last couple of years my interest in the group has declined severly, mainly because of what seems to be their dependency on MTV and "pop culture." Maybe they'll begin their own record label and start a new clothesline, while Gwen goes solo and leaves the other guys hanging around in the background like in their video.

  • I saw The Smiths in August 1986 at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. It was an absolutely life-altering experience. He gave the greatest live performance I have ever seen before or since, hands down. I say this as a HUGE Rolling Stones fan. The fact is Mick Jagger is an incredible frontman, the prototype. He started it all, I can't even imagine what rock and roll would have been without him (Keith too-those 2 are the most imitated singer/guitarist combinations in the history of rock. See The New York Dolls, Aerosmith, Black Crows, Guns N Roses, etc etc. But for me, That Smiths concert was the most moving display of greatness I have ever witnessed.

  • so i thought it may as well be controversial.......

i think marr's choice of a fave frontman (circa 1963-1969) is a great one.
the stones in their day were far better than the beatles for one main reason.
jagger and richards had charisma, whereas lennon and the other one had none............

    another front runner /s.
the jam , at their peak, (paul weller.)
    the clash, (joe strummer.)

  • As I type this, I'm listening to an alternate version of "Girl Afraid" and I can't help but ask: how can such a brilliant musician say and do so many wrong things after having the immense privilege of working with Morrissey for half a decade? Talk about a slow learner!!!
What has JM accomplished after The Smiths? Where would JM be now without The Smiths' Frontman?

  • Basicly if you look at the stage lay-out of The Smiths it is very like the Stones complete with a camp front-man and everything! Johnny always wanted to be "art-schooly" Kieth Richards and all round good musican if a little strange but very creative. love and blessings, Andrea Isonxxxxxxx
