Maudlin Rich writes:

As reported earlier, Johnny Marr was the featured artist on the Sold On Song feature of the Richard Allinson show on BBC Radio 2 all last week. He commented briefly on four songs he'd co-written: The Boy With The Thorn In His Side, The The's The Beaten Generation, Electronic's Getting Away With It and Is It Really So Strange.
I've transcribed Johnny's exact words below (I missed the The The one).

On 'TBWTTIHS' (mentioned previously):
"One of my favourites and most enduring I think... err... recently -shock horror- Morrissey and I were kind of discussing err... that song as being the one that should be rereleased if ever there was one that was rereleased. There's the scoop."

On 'Getting Away With It':
"Getting Away With It - heard it on the radio a few weeks ago, was absolutely surprised at what a great pop tune it was and kind of a bit of a soundtrack to summer for me and quite a lot of other people and just came out of the blue one early Saturday evening before we were going out to the Hacienda. Kind of perfect really."

On 'Is It Really So Strange':
"Written in Le Parc Hotel in Los Angeles err... head to head me and Morrissey together as usual done very quickly and I love the 'left my bag at Newport Pagnell" - it works every time. It was a pretty good one, yeah."

  • I'm glad to see that marr & moz are communicating again. Or did I read the post incorrectly? Marr did say recently, didn't he?

  • I like this vibe that is in the air. Moz has been saying sweet things about J. Marr for a while, and for Johnny to come around like this is wonderful.

They are getting older and wiser. The bad taste in the mouth is being slowly washed away. Civility is the first step. Friendship the second. After that people of Smithdom, anything is possible.

It's good to see this. It is important for their peace of mind, and for the way we remember their relationship.

    I'm happy.

Newport Pagnell is in Buckinghamshire, about 50 miles North of London. It has a large motorway service station and is the sort of place you might stop off at if you were travelling between the north and south of England.

  • The people who loved the Smiths and who love both Moz and Marr would have been happy to embrace talk of a reunion, many bands have done it before. Nowadays, in the age of the internet, it's a sad legacy that the whole subject has been picked to pieces and soured by the faceless, anonimity that would otherwise have remained unspoken words, just anticipation. It's so awful that two incredibly talented men cannot just sit down with tea and cake to discuss Wythenshawe and Whalley Range without being analysed, judged and argued over which side of the Atlantic they belong to. Every time an interesting story appears on this site it just gets ripped to pieces and the whole thing is taken too seriously.
