Andy Rourke's old Smiths used Yamaha bb2000 bass guitar is up for auction at EBAY (starting bid = $2400.00/£1442.48). From description on auction page: "It was purchased in 1983 and put straight to work on all The Smiths records there-after. The bass has remained in Mr. Rourke's possession for twenty years. It's featured in the gatefold cover of "Hatful Of Hollow". Mr. Rourke has also used this bass on all of the records since the demise of The Smiths:-The Pretenders, Sinead O'Connor, Badly Drawn Boy and more. The bass has a few dings which were inflicted by Andy Rourke & Johnny Marr when they figured their new guitars looked a little TOO new!! It's got a thru' neck and plays great. Plugged in, it instantly has that "Barbarism Begins at Home" twang. It comes in it's original case with a letter from Mr. Rourke. This is a rare chance to own a well documented slice of Rock n Roll history. Mr Rourke will be willing to personally autograph the instrument itself should the winner so wish. Feel free to request any j-pegs or ask any questions." eBay item 3352946350 - Ex Smiths Bass Guitar

By the way, let's start a poll about "what Andy and Micky's next move shall be" ?
1- Mike selling drum sticks (very good condition, used during the Meat is Murder Tour, can also be used as chopsticks) ?
2- Andy posing naked in Male Insiders (centrefold with exclusive interview of Andy aka Mr November entitled "November spawned a bass player")?
3- Mike selling a fringe of Morrissey's fallen quiff (revelation : Moz never had a recessing hairline, Mike was cutting a bit every night!)
4- Andy writing a book called "How I Wrote Barbarism Begins At Home". The manual gives away the best addresses in Manchester for buying syringes, spoons and rubberbands (in association with Boots stores)
5- Your own suggestion of anything pathetic.

C. who, besides you is gonna care. i would .but really how many of us are out there
D. will you be able to prove his ownership when you need to sell it.
I dont think it's such a big deal that he is selling it. We see it as a peice of history, to him it's just his old axe. I've never held on to anything forever. Why would you?

It either hints at a complete naivete in regards to the music making process, and Andy's importance in shaping the songs, or it lays bare their complete sycophantic bias towards Morrissey himself.
It really is good to grow older, but it seems as if many never acquire some of the necessary mental benefits.
Anyway, as much as I would love to have this bass, if only to cradle it while listening to The Smiths albums, I wish for something a bit more sentimental: If Andy ever cuts off a hand and puts it on ebay, I'm taking out a loan.

I don't understand why we're discussing this. if he wants to sell his old Bass guitar, so what? it's up to him. I'm sure whichever lucky Smiths fan buys it will be chuffed to bits to display it in their home. so what's the big deal?
It's hilarious that some of you nobheads are using this story as another excuse to have a pop at a great musician.

I think it would be wise to understand that not all artists hold their own music up to what the fans do, especially fans that only hold them in regard because of an infamous frontman. At heart, nobody really cares about the drummer for The Rolling Stones, for instance, and he’d probably be the same nobody he was before if not for Mick Jagger. But yet his drumset, used to record however many albums, is considered gold and would sell for millions. It doesn’t mean that Charlie guys gives much of a shit about the drums or whatever records he used them on. With all the money he has now, what does he need an old drumset for?
Andy, on the other hand, may feel the very same way about the Smiths, but he may also actually have to worry about paying bills. So the equation is easy.
Blake from Jawbreaker sold his guitar after the band broke up; as far as I recall it had been used on every Jawbreaker record simply because that was his only guitar. Granted, he wasn't as wealthy as The Smiths were, but guitarists tend to like using the same guitar, even if they do have a few others for back-ups and special songs which require a different sound.
But as for using the same one over and over, they've broken it in and it feels comfortable, like people who keep the same pair of shoes for five or six years. If they were moved to buy another, they'd probably have just purchased the same guitar anyway, so if the old one isn't broken, why not keep it and use it over and over? It doesn't have to have any real sentimental attachment. Especially if, as in the case of Blake, he didn't like Jawbreaker anymore and didn't need the guitar.
I wouldn't venture that Andy has much of a regard for the Smiths anymore, especially given how badly he’s been treated financially when the other two in the band got very wealthy off it. If he has other basses he uses now instead, why hold onto Smiths "artifacts" when he can sell them for lots of money to obsessive fans?
After Jawbreaker Blake was sick of music and sold it to buy a nice typewriter. He sold it on Ebay, actually.
