Anthony writes:

in the new issue of Blender magazine the editors and some artists compiled a list of the 1001 greatest songs to download. The Smiths made Ryan Adams list :

"William, It Was Really Nothing"

"The kind of people who don't understand this music are guys who never cry and whose girlfriends have never peed in front of them."

as well as Nick Zinner's (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) :

"Bigmouth Strikes Again"

"Johnny Marr. Johnny Marr. Johnny Marr. Yeah, the other guy is ok, but really now..."

and Mark Hoppus' (Blink-182) :

"Cemetry Gates"

"This song made me learn who Keats and Yeats are."

there was also a blurb about Morrissey:

Also in the studio...

Icon of melancholy Morrissey is currently in a recording studio in London making his seventh album as a solo artist since he disbanded the Smiths back in 1987...

  • Yeah, this mention in Blender mag is pretty strange...according to them, the new album is in the process of being recorded, which seems unlikely considering Boz is in Japan at the moment...

The new producer is already introducing Morrissey to his friends from Blink 182, me think.

It's funny to read Nick's comment from the YYY's here now, because I shot them for a documentary I was doing last summer and the entire group gave a collective groan when I began championing the Smiths. I was wearing a Smiths t-shirt that evening and they pretty much declared the YYY's music was in reaction to 'that sort of thing' and 'that self-deprecating emo activity' (meaning Morrissey and the Smiths). Nick did however say 'that band was all about Johnny Marr' and that seems to be echoed in this article. Funny to see him actually citing them as an influence now.
