In Issue #29 of Australian DVD magazine "Region 4" Tony Wilson is interviewed to coincide with the Oz double-disc release of "24 Hour Party People" on DVD. When asked "Did you really pass on signing The Smiths?", he replies: "Yes, Morrissey was part of the movie but never made it past the cutting room. There are four different versions of why Factory never signed The Smiths. My version was Factory had been a brilliant label for two or three years and if you're the only label in the world that doesn't promote it's great promotion. Suddenly that idealism became a dinosaur and I couldn't shift a record. So I was very depressed and although I went to the second ever Smiths gig and I was just bowled over, having decided that Morrissey would never make a rock star when he told me in his bedroom he was going to be a rockstar about a year earlier there was no way I was going to saddle The Smiths with my, at that point, non-working label. In terms of history, if The Smiths hadn't have gone to Rough Trade, British independent music would have died because Rough Trade would have gone bankrupt. Mr Morrissey had a great talent and was a truly horrible human being who treated others very badly and I'm over the moon that I never had to work with him."

Hahahahaha yeah ok Tony, whatever. He always was, and obviously remains, full of shit.

As for his character assassination of Moz - pot meet kettle Tony.

  • Tony Wilson is "a man trapped in a pig's body" and "the day somebody shoves Wilson in the boot of a car and drives his body to Saddleworth Moor is the day that Manchester music will be revived."

  • Morrissey - A horrible person!!

Well by putting 2 and 2 together, his track record of being difficult to pay up for stuff and his lack of ability to forge a lasting relationship, I'd say Mr Wilson is right.

As an ex colleague of Mozzer said to me "He doesn't care who he pisses off because at the end of the day he has no mates - he's just Billy No Mates."

If you can't get yourself mates it's because youre a twat. I love Morrissey's music but I think he is a horrible twat.

  • Tony Wilson is a living legend, as any Mancunian with half a brain will tell you, he has done more for the city of Manchester than anyone else in recent history.

It's hilarious the way you're all slagging off someone you've never met, and most of you are defending someone else you've never meet (ie Mozzer), it shows what a bunch of twats you children are.
I admit I'm a bit dubious about TW's reason for not signing the Smiths, but who knows? it could be the truth. Whatever happened to innocent until priven guilty?
