Here's that important bit.

VH1: What rock wordsmiths do you admire?

RW: Stephen Malkmus is good, because he can create his own world. You have no idea what he’s getting into, but you feel compelled to listen to him. Morrissey, too, obviously, for the classic bedroom angst. There’s a lot of “Bigmouth Strikes Again” in “You Held the World in Your Arms.” That’s why we don’t play acoustic very often!

  • I remember seeing Idlewild when the Captain mini-album came out. Roddy was quite the performer back then, full of anxious, nervous energy. Choking himself with mic leads!

It was difficult then to see any Smiths/Moz influence but you can hear it on the last album, alongside the more obvious REM-isms.

A fine band...the best Scottish band around? Mind you, there are a few...Delgadoes, Mogwai, Belle and Sebastian, Urusei Yatsura etc.

  • There has never been a decent Scottish band.

I should know as I am English and therefore I am far superior to our ginger, transvestite friends north of the border.
