"After he identified me, he jokingly said, ‘It’s as if I’m looking at a mirror,’" Maldonado recalled over lunch, savoring that moment more than the nachos he was gobbling. "He then asked me about our show the Wednesday before his appearance. ‘You heard about it?’ I asked. ‘Of course I did,’ Morrissey replied. ‘I hear about all your shows.’"

Finally, Maldonado had the approval he had long sought from the person of whom he says, "When I first got into Morrissey, I thought it was my life’s goal to get as many people as possible to listen to the man."

  • I can't believe Maldonado is a life guard. I've seen him with his shirt off.

  • This guy is on serious crack. Can I get some too?

  • i don't know what to think about this guy, or the whole morrissey/smiths cover band. it goes so much beyond the fans you'll meet in line at a show, where conversations often center around which rare 7" singles you have. i see julia riley at every show, every single one. she never brags about it. i've never seen her posing in front of the grave maurice, or doing interviews for sunny californian newspapers. she has some sort of grace in that sense. so who does this guy think he is? he has the means to comb his hair to look generally like morrissey, but that doesn't make him anything like morrissey himself. i tried all through high school to comb mine like moz, but i was lucky enough to figure out that morrissey's brilliance is not in his riah, but in his originality. singing covers in southern california is not original. it is nice, granted, to hear the smiths sung, but this guy and all of his hipster buddies should lock themselves in their bedrooms and write their OWN songs, and sing their OWN lives. grabbing the tiny bit of hipster fame that being in a cover band offers is pretty weak guys. as long as the members of cover band are being given interviews, why don't i start to give interviews concerning my collection of rare smiths records? please, someone give julia an interview, not these wankers. please, someone interview david t., he has something interesting to say about morrissey fandom, he is DOING something about it, forget these bad cover singers. where would we be now if morrissey had been like these lads and started a new york dolls cover band instead of writing his own words? at least morrissey was smarter than these ordinary boys.

  • I've said it time and again. We don't do this because we are looking for fame, or trying to "out-fan" anyone, or because I have some notion that I'm better than Morrissey, or any of the number of things that have been said about me by certain anonymous posters on this site (which we enthusiastically sponsor). The Hooligans is NOT our livelihood. It's a hobby, people. It's FUN. We do it out of love and respect for an artist we admire and respect. We also do it, because we are ASKED to do it. Honestly, I don't know how many times I have to say it. It's never been a competition for me to see who is the bigger Morrissey fan. And for the record, it's never been about us versus These Charming Men. They are a class act and a brilliant band as well. Why would I begrudge them? They, like us, have their day jobs and occasionally like to play Smiths songs for those who'll hear them. Sound familiar? Love and thanks to all who came out to see us at The Galaxy! --Jose Maldonado

    Sweet and Tender Hooligans
  • I'm not sure why all of the hostility towards the sweet and tender hooligans, when morrissey himself enjoys the band and has been to the shows. They are not trying to clame the songs as their own, if you ever actually go to one of their shows you would hear them repeatedly give credit to both morrissey and the musicians he works with. Each of the members of the band will explain that the only reason they give these performances is because of their profound love and admiration for the smiths and morrissey, and that is why the audience is there as well. Julia Riley shows her support and admiration in her own way, and so do the sweet and tender hooligans. There is no need to critisize any action that is purely motivated by love
