From the pages of the Morrissey infatuated Spin Magazine (September, 2003 issue), several references to The Man himself.

On their top 30 “Cool List” Morrissey is listed under “Forever Cool,” along with Ian Curtis, Janis Joplin, Keith Richards, Lou Reed, Mark E Smith, Jimi Hendrix, Tupac, Serge Gainsbourg, Joey Ramone, Joan Jett, and Iggy Pop.

Under #27 Ryan Adams, “What kind of makes him (Adams) cool: Listening to him argue about Morrissey’s solo career at the beginning of the Heartbreaker album.”

And a small review in Spin’s Reissue Section of Under the Influence: Morrissey with an amusing photo of Steven Patrick under a large lettered, red and white “NUDE” sign with a dollar bill hanging out of his mouth. Caption reads: “Rethinking his new career as a Chippendales dancer: Morrissey.”

Here’s how the review reads:

“My life is high walls topped by spiked glass, and the whirl of schoolboy tribulations are lifted only by cheaply recorded noise.” Proust? Almost—it’s the liner notes to a mix-tape-as-memoir project by Morrissey, the only man whose diary would fetch higher ebay bids than Chris Carrabba’s. Alongside classic NYC punk (Dolls, Ramones, Patti Smith), the former Smiths vocalist dusts off some mind-boggling obscurities, from the Sundown Playboys’ Cajun honky-tonk to a ska version of “Swan Lake.”

i wouldn't describe Ian Curtis as being cool. interesting, maybe. Janis Joplin was more tacky than anything. Keith Richards thinks he's cool. didn't Lou Reed have a mullet once? Mark E Smith is odd. Jimi Hendrix is talented and inspired. Tupac was cooler when he was dancing with Digital Underground, as someone once said. Serge Gainsbourg is cool, for a perv. Joey Ramone is awkward. Joan Jett is... Joan Jett. and Iggy Pop is a freak.

Morrissey is too maladjusted to be cool.

i think Jarvis Cocker and Jonathan Richman are cool.

Of course Mozza is forever cool. However, he loses one or two cool points when an uncool publication such as Spin says so.

Whoever mentioned Jonathon Richman, I agree, Jonathon is righteously cool as well!!

  • This is well interesting, I actually wrote my degree disertation on 'the origins and concept of cool', and I'm quite fascinated by the subject. I wrote about how the media,Public Relations, advertisers and Designers create a sense of verisimilitude, a consensus, over cool.

Most people think Elvis is cool, but I don't think he is, he was a great performer and singer, but he didn't have any intellectual property, ie his songs were penned by Lieber and Stoller, his image created by Colonel Tom Parker and Sun Records. He was manufactored and that's uncool.

True cool people have to possess some sort of intellectual/artistic inclination. I think that Moz's hero James Dean has that with his fantastic acting ability, as does Marlon Brando and their pre-decessors like Montgomory Clift and Humphrey Bogart.

In literature, I think that, earlier on in the 20th century, F Scott Fitzgerald of 'Great Gatsby' fame, and the Beat Generation (Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs et al) were fantastically cool because of two things, their amazing, challenging and ground breaking work, and their 'rock and roll' hedonistic lifestyles. Today I think that writers like Douglas Coupland (who wrote 'Girlfriend in a Coma' possibly my favourite book of all time) and JT LeRoy are cool, because they are Zeitgiests, they write in the here and now, sort of post-postmodern.

In Music I think Ian McCulloch of Echo and the Bunnymen is the coolest of them all, for his image, his attachment to his local area, (Liverpool), his sparkling wit, and for the fact that he and the Bunnymen have consitently made great music over the course of about a dozen albums, whilst never 'selling out'. John Lennon is someone who sold out and I think that makes him uncool.

Some may argue that, by being in America, Moz has sold out and that could make him uncool. I think Moz is cool, cos of his refusal to comform (ie his rebellious nature- yes I do think Moz is a rebel!), his Wilde-esque wit and his truly heroic music and image.

my top ten coolest people in music would be something like:

    1. Ian McCulloch
    2. Morrissey
    3. Jeff Buckley
    4. Chuck D
    5. Scott Walker
    6. Lou Reed
    7 Woody Guthrie
    8. Serge Gainsbourg
    9. Paul Robeson
    10. Ian Curtis

Although Moz will probably go straight to the top when his new album comes out! Can't Wait!

  • Cosmic Dancer is a retard. What sort of degree were you doing, to do a disertation on the origins of cool???? What a sad man you are.

Ian McCulloch is a sad scouse git and never was or ever will be cool. Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs are also not cool as they are were a bunch of horrible hippies who could not take their drugs.

Elvis was and will forever be cool, however he does not get into my top 10 as Change of Habit (1969) was a truly awful but hilarious movie for all the wrong reasons.

Here is my top 10 of cool in the music world, in no particualar order:

    1. Nick Cave
    2. Morrissey
    3. Mark E Smith
    4. Ian Dury
    5. Scott Walker (the only yank in my top 10 list)
    6. Ian Curtis
    7. Noddy Holder
    8. Marc Bolan
    9. John Lydon
    10. John Peel (I know he is a DJ, but he is and forever will be a top bloke).
