The Grave Maurice Pub has now put Moz's Under the Influence poster in their window, as it's on my bus route home I thought I'd take a few snaps, attached. I didn't know until recently, [this is a Moz/Krays connection] that The Blind Beggar Pub is only about 100 yds further up the road, on the same side as The Grave Maurice! photos: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Do you reckon they put up the poster to alert people towards their live music on Saturday? Maybe they want people to get a bit confused and think Mozzer is playing (maybe he is!!!!!!)!!
The Grave Maurice (Score:1)
A splendidly rough old pub in the thronging Whitechapel Road Market. Plain old seats, dirty old tables, smelly old carpet and that's about it - except for a couple of nice lamps. It's so bare and empty that it almost looks like designer minimalist. Well, almost. The clientele is nearly all old codgers with roll-ups hanging out of the side of their mouths plus the odd dodgy geezer.
We have been sent lots of information about this pub since our visit (thanks to Andrew T). Apparently it was until fairly recently a much more elegant place with red plush drapes, leather furniture and brass lighting, and the haunt of the famous - and infamous; Ricahard Widmark, Diana Dors and those famous local thugs the Kray's; Ronnie popped in here for a pint after the brutal killing of George Cornell in the nearby Blind Beggar pub. On a more pleasant note, Jeff Goldblum was often seen in here at one point as he was having an affair with rthe landlady's daughter. The pub has become a place of pilgrimage for Morrisey fans who come to see the pub outside the foppish one had his photo taken for an album cover (see below). The name Grave Maurice derives from 'Graaf Maurits' - Graaf is Dutch for Earl or Prince; Maurits was the son of William and Mary.

Your comments are depressing beyond belief - do you know the area you are talking about?
The area is not run down because "there are too many asian faces". WRONG. Read any book on the history of the East End and find out the truth. Why not start with a book called "The People of the Abyss" by Jack London which was written 100 years ago when there weren't any asian faces in Whitechapel - not only is this book a classic, but it describes the life of the poor and homeless in the East End. The East End of London has long been known as an area with poverty and social problems.
Also you say it's "a distinctly English area of the east end" - WRONG again. The East End has been home to large numbers of immigrants for hundreds of years... 100 years ago the area was home to an enormous number of Jewish immigrants, 200 years ago the area was inhabited by Hugenots fleeing religious persecution in Europe.
Rather than contributing to the area being "terribly run down" the Bengali immigrants have brought a tremendous amount to the area in terms of business, culture and new young families.
I live in Tower Hamlets, walk past the Grave Maurice every working day and teach nearby, teaching some of those "asian faces" that offend your sensibilities. I work in a school that is 99% Bengali and I know our country is better off having these children living here - they have a lot of talent and are going to contribute a great deal to this country's economy and cultural life in the future.
Whitechapel/ Spitalfields may be a bit rough around the edges but it is one of the most fascinating areas in London and that is in part due to the fact that it is inhabited by people from all over the world. It is also home to some of the country's leading artists and designers and has some of London's best clubs and bars. London is one of the greatest cities in the world because of the people who live here. Large scale immigration has not been without its problems but I believe the pluses far outweigh the minuses.
Dear "Anonymous" I do hope that you don't live in the East End, I would hate to have a neighbour with an attitude like yours. You sound like you'd be better off in a dull suburb with a lot of narrow minded Daily Mail readers. However, I hope you will one day visit Spitalfields/ Whitechapel and change your mind.

The East End of London has been the home of the vast and diverse imigrant population of London since Roman times, its the the heart of London - the East European Jews, The Heugenots, The Asian and Somali population to name a few give this area its identity and kept it vibrant for decades, yes - its run down, but so what - its alive.
There is no such thing as distinctly English in the way you use it - except in your empty little head. Go back to wanking in you bedroom to pictures of Nancy Mitford, you looser.
