Here are the pictures from our local paper, the Bradford Telegraph & Argus (8th July). Article - page 1, page 2. The pictures of me are screen-grabs, that's why they look a little crappy.

As for the cartoon (A very poor quality Morrissey) - you need to know that Smiths (or, more properly W H Smiths) is a chain of book and stationery stores in the UK.

  • I watched the programme and also saw the T&A article - excellent stuff! I love the Morrissey 'punch-up era' picture that they chose for the paper.

I know Listerhills Road, will your boss be cross if I drop in and say 'Hi'?

Good luck for the quarter finals!

Hey ho everyone. Here are the questions. Let's be honest, they won't exactly tax your brain too much, but who cares?

1 The Smiths were formed when lyricist Morrissey joined forces with guitarist Johnny Marr & bassist Andy Rourke & which drummer?

2 Turning down Manchester based Factory records, in April 1983 the Smiths signed a one off deal with which London based independent label?

3 In their early shows Morrissey would often pay tribute to his earlier influences. How did he do so in the case of Johnny Ray?

4 Before Andy Rourke joined the band, the Smiths played their debut gig in October 1982 at which Manchester venue?

5 The Smiths released their debut single in May 1983 when it immediately topped the UK independent chart. What was it’s title?

6 In May 1983, on which programme on Radio1 could their first session be heard?

7 Which British actor objected to the use of his image on the sleeve of the Smiths 1984 single “What difference does it make”?

8 Nov. 1984, the Smiths released a low priced album, a collection of BBC radio sessions & B-sides, under what title?

9 In March 1985, the actress Pat Phoenix reportedly declared by the band as “the greatest woman who ever lived” appeared on the sleeve of which of the Smiths single release?

10 On which label did the band release their debut album “The Smiths” in the USA?

11 The band’s highest chart single “Heavens knows I’m Miserable now” reached No.10 despite some retail chains refusing to stock it. Why did they refuse?

12 Which 1985 single release ultimately provided backing for a TV jeans commercial was also sampled(?) in a 90’s hit “Hippy Chick”?

13 Which venue in Madison Square Gardens New York, did the band play in Sept. 1984 on a brief visit to the U.S.?

14 In Feb 1985, the Smiths released an album which went straight to No.1, displacing Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA”. What was the album title?

  • 1) from the article he referred to someone as a "hideous trout" HAHA! I laughed for 5 minutes straight...is calling someone a "trout" some sort of British euphemism?

2)Often I've seen Morrissey in pictures with scratches and things...what is the deal with this?

  • I didn't quite catch the full question for some reason, did they get a question wrong? I have a feeling they asked you about a Madison Square Garden gig in Jan or Feb 1984? The fact it was New Years Eve 1983 might have something to do with why you failed to get the answer!!

  • Congratulations of Peter Finan on his reaching the quarter finals. What could he choose for his specialised subject next time? Perhaps "The Songs of Morrissey, 1988-present"? I thought it was interesting that the name Morrissey wasn't mentioned when the contestant was being probed by Mr. Humphreys between rounds: 'HIS lyrics are monumental', 'HE ranks with Dylan'. Anyone watching who wasn't familiar with the songs must have been under the illusion that they had all been written by a man called Smith.
